Volunteers’ Week – Celebrating Our Trustees

As part of Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a huge thank you to our amazing Trustees.

Our Trustees volunteer their time, skills, and experience to help guide the Mission and support our long-term success. Behind the scenes, they attend regular meetings, review and prepare reports, provide advice and challenge, and help ensure we remain focused on our values and objectives.

Thank you for your time, support, and ongoing commitment to the Mission.

What an amazing afternoon we had yesterday at our Volunteer Celebration Event!

It was a wonderful opportunity to come together, celebrate our incredible volunteers, and thank them for the dedication, compassion, and hard work they bring to Huddersfield Mission every day. Our volunteers make a real difference in the lives of people across our community, and we are so grateful for everything they do.

While it was fantastic to spend time with so many of our volunteers, we also want to recognise and thank those who were unable to join us. Your contribution is equally valued, and this celebration was for you too.

A special thank you goes to our Community Café team, who prepared a fantastic buffet enjoyed by everyone who attended. The food was delicious and helped make the event even more special.

One of our café volunteers, Mark, shared these lovely words:

"The Volunteer Celebration event was a great experience – I love being part of a team and willing to share the same goal and help people who are in need. The atmosphere in the room was amazing and heart-warming; long may it continue. Also, the catering girls in the Community Café made a lovely buffet – well done to the café team. I'm really looking forward to the next one."

Thank you, Mark, and thank you to every one of our volunteers. Whether you joined us at the celebration or were unable to join us, you are the heart of Huddersfield Mission. We couldn't do what we do without your kindness, commitment, and support.

As we start Volunteers Week, we want to say a HUGE thank you to all our volunteers. Your time, care, and hard work make a real difference to people in Huddersfield experiencing poverty, mental health challenges, homelessness, and addiction.

This year, with your support:

- 883 people received help during difficult times.
- Volunteers gave an amazing 1,840 hours of their time.
- We delivered 2,885 advice and support sessions.
- People on low incomes received £70,314.87 in food bank referrals, fuel vouchers, and emergency clothing.
- A further £7,209.41 of emergency food, clothing, and crisis support was provided through Huddersfield Mission’s own welfare resources.
- Our cafe served 2,392 free or low cost meals.

Whether you volunteer in the café, art group, advice drop-in, or as Trustee, you help make Huddersfield Mission a welcoming, safe, and supportive place for everyone who comes through our doors.

Thank you — we couldn't do it without you.

"Huddersfield Mission saved my life." 💙

What does Huddersfield Mission mean to the people who walk through our doors? For one of our community members, it meant everything.

They initially started using our café while facing severe stress, family homelessness, and food insecurity. But while accessing our drop-in advice service for help with housing and finances, our team ended up providing life-saving support.

When they mentioned experiencing chest pains—thinking it was just indigestion—our Health & Community Officer recognised the danger, took it seriously, and helped them get triaged straight to the hospital. It turned out to be a heart attack.

👇 In their own words:

"If the Community & Health Officer hadn’t given me the kick up the bum I would not have done anything... I was told I would have been dead by Friday." 🛑

Thanks to that swift action, they are now in their own flat, in a much better financial situation, and still receiving our ongoing support. Following conversations with our Health & Community Officer, they even managed to quit smoking, and they are now looking forward to giving back by volunteering with us in the future!

As they beautifully put it: "The best! You are making a huge difference to people’s lives." 🌟

We are incredibly proud of our team for the vital, everyday work they do. If you or someone you know needs support, our advice drop-in services (9.30am to 12pm) and community café (9.15am to 1.30pm) are here for you.
