What a truly uplifting Sunday at St Nicholas Church, Houghton! This morning’s service, beautifully led by Reverend Charles Hadley, was filled with faith, warmth, and a real sense of togetherness. 🤲 Afterwards, we enjoyed lovely drinks, nibbles and conversations — the perfect way to celebrate community spirit and friendship. 🍷🍪

We are delighted to announce that with effect from January 2026, canon Martin Poll has been appointed as the new vicar of the parish of Bury, Coldwaltham, Hardham and Houghton!

Canon Martin Poll brings a wealth of experience to this new role. He is currently domestic chaplain to His Majesty The King and a canon of Windsor. He joined the Royal Navy in 1990 and served in various sea-going and shore-side appointments , including active service in the former Yugoslavia as the first chaplain to the Commando Helicopter Force, and at Sea during the second Gulf Conflict. He was appointed principal chaplain and archdeacon for the Royal Navy in November 2010 and has been precentor of St George’s Chapel since 2013.

Beyond his chaplaincy, Martin is vice chair of governors of the Royal School and also a governor of St George’s School Windsor Castle. He is also vice chair of trustees of the Association of Royal Naval Officers and a trustee of the Windsor Festival.
