First of all a big thank you to all those who came and supported our Live Steam Steam Trains and Model show back in September. Once again a big thank you to the West Wilts Society of model engineers, who will have been running 60 years in 2025. And who have lent us the indoor live steam railway that you have seen in the Church hall.

In preparing this tree I wondered where the tradition of a model train around a Christmas tree came from? There have been model train as Christmas Presents since the 1890’s in those days they were clockwork or live steam, imagine setting fire to the lounge floor on Christmas morning! The model train was probably the first “tech toy” you could buy. Some research revealed the train around the Christmas tree is an American tradition from the 1920’s and 1930’s. With toy train makers such as American Flyer and Lionel starting to make electrically powered model trains at that time. It became easy to display a working model train in a toy shop Christmas display. The Americans were one of the first countries to have electricity in their homes. And a Christmas tree with electric lights on rather than candles!!. Houses would have only had one socket in each room, so it would have been the only place to put the model train, around the electrically lit Christmas tree. These early early electric toy trains took the electricity to the rails at mains voltage, 100 – 250 volts! Imagine the surprise the pet cat may have got whilst flicking the lower decorations on the tree with its paws!
