π Carillon Restored β Wonderful News for Holsworthy π
I am delighted to announce that, after four years of silence, the church carillon has been fully repaired and is once again bringing the bells of Holsworthy back to life.
This has been a long and careful journey. The carillon is a bespoke apparatus dating from 1949, and restoring it was no small task. It was completely dismantled and returned to the workshops of the Cumbria Clock Company, where it underwent a full restoration and rebuild. This involved highly complex mechanical engineering, together with intricate electrical systems that had to be extensively rewired.
In addition to the carillon restoration, a separate programme of bell restoration took place during the summer, made possible through considerable fundraising efforts. Thanks to this hard work and generosity, the bells themselves are now in excellent condition. Together, these projects have fully restored the sound of Holsworthyβs bells, allowing them to be heard once more across the town.
The restoration of the carillon has only been possible thanks to the extraordinary generosity of a benefactor β a gentleman with long-standing connections to Holsworthy β who funded the carillon project in its entirety. We are immensely grateful for his support.
The carillon is capable of playing 13 different tunes and now sounds five times daily, every three hours on the hour:
π 9am
π 12pm
π 3pm
π 6pm
π 9pm
During the Christmas season, it is currently playing βThe First Noelβ, fitting for this special time of year. After Christmas, listeners will once again be able to hear its most famous tune, βThe Holsworthy Church Bellsβ, written especially for the Holsworthy bells by Dr Samuel Sebastian Wesley (c.1865).
The bells of Holsworthy are considered one of the finest peals of eight in Devon, and it is a joy to hear them brought back to life and ringing out once again.
πΆ Please enjoy the photos and video, and listen out for the sound of the carillon and bells as they once again ring across Holsworthy.
