Throwback 2025: our 5th birthday party included art in the walled garden… And Jon Barrett (photographic capturer #1 of Alfoxton’s spirit) took these pics of the happy would-be Monets, dabbing colours in the sunshine…

We have a new ART + BUDDHISM retreat this year:
‘Form and Emptiness’
30 July - 3 August
‘Explore imagination as a doorway to a deeper experience of ourselves and the world’
Mark-making, clay and creative writing, for a playful exploration of form and image.

Dome raising! > after lots of prep, our Meditation Dome rose last week, for its second season. Thanks who made it for us. We love it. > Come join us for a retreat or workshop this summer: warmth of community, meditation, art, the wild beauty of the Quantock hills…

We’re excited to have Suvajra leading our main retreat this year. Maitriyogini and Subhuti’s words help explain why.

Suvajra is a Triratna order member with one of the deepest practices and strongest connections to the movement’s roots.

He’s not led many retreats of late, but we will have two weeks with him this summer!

Perhaps you can join us.

A chance to really explore the ideal of living for the benefit of all beings, supported by the summer beauty of Alfoxton Park.

DETAILS
A Spirit That Impels - Meditation Intensive
6-19 June
Alfoxton Park, Somerset
Led by Suvajra, with Vimalachitta, Dhibajana and Jayaraja.

Full Subhuti quote below:
“Much of Suvajra’s life in the Order has been spent in India, where he trained several generations of Order members, many of them now fulfilling the most senior responsibilities in the Indian wing of the Order and Movement. He spent some years looking after Bhante Sangharaksh*ta and was with him when he died. And he grew close to Dhardo Rimpoche, before whom Bhante took the Bodhisattva vows. Suvajra participated in the Rimpoche’s funeral rites and has written his biography. He is also researching the lives of some of Bhante’s other teachers. Having worked closely with Suvajra over many years both at Padmaloka and in India, I have witnessed his remarkable gift for connecting with a wide range of people. I have also seen the depth and discipline of his spiritual practice. I cannot think of a better person to lead a retreat on the Bodhisattva Ideal.”

Last November* Alfoxton’s community took a working retreat at Tiratanaloka Ware - the new women’s ordination centre in the making.

Bought from a retiring set of Carmelite nuns, it’s a fantastic site, centred around an early 20th century mock Tudor house, with lovely craft details - and a bedroom for Jesus!

The three of us who drove there in Alfoxton’s battered Ford Transit van had the A-Team theme playing as we arrived at Ware, and I did feel like our training at Alfoxton - an ambitious renovation on a minimal budget! - made us ready to be dropped in situ and just make stuff happen.

There’s a classic photo inside the back of our van, of the essential items we took with us: mattresses to sleep in, PPE/power tools… and musical instruments —> Art is not an optional extra 🎨🎶

Dan, our expert woodsman, brought his tree gear to tend to the arboreal beings on the land.

Others of us were set to trimming and fitting insulation in the top floor, which was good fun.

We got a tour before work started, in our high vis of course!

THANK YOU to the community at Ware for such a warm welcome, for beautiful time practicing together (in the old library), and the chance to gift our help to the impressive project.

Just what is it that makes Alfoxton so different, so appealing* … for young Buddhists?

Katherine and Josh explain what drew them to live here, and what you’ll be exploring if you join the upcoming Sub35 retreat:

Between Roof and Sky
30 April - 4 May
Alfoxton Park, Somerset

If you’re a young member of the Triratna community this could be a wonderful weekend to explore:

“Why would I want to live a Dharma life more fully?”

“What’s gained by practicing within a community?”

“What do young people need to thrive in their practice?”

Retreat led by members of the community plus Nagavajri and Aryadasa.

*This is a Pop Art culture reference. 😎

Jargon buster:
‘GFR’ = Going For Refuge (have asked for ordination)
‘Mitra’ = ‘friend’ in Sanskrit, someone who has committed to walking the Buddhist path within the Triratna movement.

I took this video last year, when the stunning sunrise held me long past the start of our community’s morning mediation…. (MB)

The beautiful song is recorded at the singing retreat here - and there are two coming up this year.
