St Martin's Church, Hindringham

St Martin's Church, Hindringham St Martin's is an Anglican church, part of the Norwich diocese. Parish Priest:

Rev Robin Stapleford The tower originally took 3 bells swinging E to W.

The following is taken from the Guide to the church, available to purchase in hard copy from the church, price £1.00, written in 1985 by Mr Richard Butler-Stoney. The church is on a splendid site, towering above a cluster of houses and a farmstead. Its imposing tower, 84ft high, rises above the hill and can be seen from many miles away. The church was built or enlarged to its present grand proport

ions shortly before the Black Death, say between 1330 and 1348, which is the Decorated period. The chancel arch and the arcading are of that date and the belfry windows in the tower, but there is also much Perpendicular period work which is slightly later. The original tower collapsed about 1386 and was entirely re-built. In its re-building, the new style was used for the first stage, but the belfry used the stone as before. A fourth bell was added in 1636 by shortening the pits and swinging it N to S. In 1906 a fifth bell was hung above the others. In 1911 the bellframe was made stronger but further work is again needed to make full circle ringing possible again. One bell dated 1770 has its inscription filed off, so was possibly made for another church and bought second hand. The porch contains a particularly fine Holy Water stoup on the right hand as you enter the church.

Another great working party from the Ivy Group and other members of our community. Decorating the church ready for Christmas then a lovely social and ‘thank you’ tea party for all Friends, 100 club members, flower arrangers - anyone and everyone who helps build our strong community. Thank you all. The 100 Club Christmas draw was drawn by birthday girl Carolyn, who also baked her own birthday cake and all the other amazing delights too. What a chef!
