Pancake day 2018
Pancake Day 2018 falls on February 13. It always falls 47 days before Easter so the date moves but it will always be between February 3 and March 9.
What is Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday is the day that precedes Ash Wednesday . As it is determined by Easter, for which the actual date changes on an annual basis.
The name Shrove Tuesday comes from 'shrive', meaning absolution for sins by doing penance. The day gets its name from the tradition of Christians trying to be 'shriven' before Lent. Christians would go to Confession, where they admit their sins to a priest and ask for absolution. A bell would be rung to call them to Confession, which was called the 'pancake bell'. It's still rung today. .
Why pancakes?
In the past the ideas was for families to clear out their cupboards and remove rich foods so they aren't in their house during Lent. Eggs, milk and sugar aren't traditionally eaten in fasting season, so need to be used up beforehand.
The actual tradition of mixing them up for pancakes is thought to come from a pagan ritual, but others say it is a Christian tradition - with each ingredient representing one of the four pillars of the faith. Eggs for creation, flour sustenance or the staff of life, salt for wholesomeness and milk for purity.

Remembrance Day is almost upon us - the whole nation will observe a two minute silence at 11am on 11th November to remember those who died for our freedom in past wars and those who still suffer as a result of conflict. You may like to pray this prayer as you make your own act of Remembrance on 11/11:

A Prayer of Remembrance
Almighty God,
hear our prayers and thanksgivings
for all whom we remember this day.
We hold before you those men and women
who have died in active service:
whether that has been in recent times or many years ago.
We still feel their loss. As we honour their courage and cherish their memory,
may we put our faith in you. You walk with us through grief and are well acquainted with sorrow. You are our the source of life and hope,
now and for ever. Help us trust you
Amen.

We will remember....................

October 4th

World Animal Day takes place on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, October 4th. Started in 1931 in Italy, this annual celebration of all things furry is now a popular day in which we remember the important role that animals have to play in our world, as well as the people who devote their lives working to protect and care for them.
