Blantyre Old 450th

Blantyre Old 450th Still Serving the Community In 2017 Blantyre Old celebrated its 450th Anniversary and celebrated this throughout the year with various events. Leadbetter & Co.

Also to mark the occasion we had a display and exhibition with local people's memorabilia including historical documents. We had a dedicated team led by Senior Elder Robert Freer with support from local historian Gordon Cook. Gordon and Robert were good friends with the late Charlie Neilson who was an Elder at Blantyre Old and loved his church and local parish dearly. Charlie's daughter, Margaret,

has kept his all his historical documents of the Church, which he mainly received from Gordon. Margaret has spent a lot of time by collating and filing the information. Many of the documents have also been transcribed by congregation member Ella Cunningham, who has a passion for history. Sadly, Robert passed away during this time but his work was continued on by the dedicated 450 Team. Below is brief information about Blantyre Old and where it all began. Please keep an eye on our page for more information. We will also be launching a new website to coincide with the celebrations.

Blantyre Old Parish Church was founded in 1567 by the Rev. William Chirnside who had been priest in charge of Blantyre Priory from 1552 to 1567. The Parish Church in use from the Reformation stood until 1793 when it was replaced by a plain and barn like building erected on the same site. This was demolished in 1863 when a larger and more beautiful church was erected within 50 yards of the original site. The Church bell was presented to the heritors of Blantyre Parish in 1863 by Mr. & Mrs. Founders, Glasgow. The old burial ground adjoining the church is no longer in use but is maintained and cared for by the local council. The oldest gravestone discovered so far is dated 1665 and is Rev. John Heriot, 90, born 1575 when Mary Queen of Scots, was on the throne. Dr. David Livingstone was baptised at Blantyre Old Parish Church and the font used is still used for baptisms today.

We are taking the situation seriously, and very aware that our church family contains very vulnerable people, not just older people, but actually young folk as well who have underlying health conditions. Remember we don’t know what everyone is going through! We also appreciate that some believe that society is over reacting. However, Blantyre Old knows what it is to be complacent and pay the price. Therefore, as my Gran used to say - better safe than sorry. So following advice we are closing down as many non-essential groups or meetings as possible.
The Leisure Group will meet Monday 16th March for those who wish to attend, and then stop.
Messy Church will not happen in March. Holy Week and Easter services will be planned but may be subject to change.
Pastoral visiting will continue but as always visits will be booked in advance to check if it is suitable. Ministers are recommended to avoid direct physical contact with those in the vulnerable groups.
Church worship will continue but please practice good hand hygiene, and choose wisely about attending! There will be no tea/coffee after the service for the foreseeable future.
Update to follow on The Guild meeting.

And we will sharing the sign of the peace - BSL style like we learned last week in worship. No handshaking.

I know this goes against the very nature of Church - to welcome all and be available to all. We will try to be like that, and please leave a contact number with the Minister or the pastoral care team, so we can at least give you a phone.
We are also looking at ideas of how we can remain connected yet disconnected...and keep praying.

And remember the Minister is also human and just as susceptible to this virus, and doesn’t want to let anyone down by having to self-isolate. And without wanting to sound arrogant - there are not many folks wanting to do my job! 🤭 😆 😇
God bless you!

Today’s verse in the seems very appropriate!
