And he is up!!!

On a glorious sunny August day too…. He gleamed in the sunlight, pirouetted like a spring chicken in the slight breeze, and brought a tear to my eye!

We’ll be choosing his name next.

Meet the Golden Cockerel: Hewelsfield Church’s Historic Weathercock Comes Down to Earth for One Weekend Only!

Visitors to Hewelsfield Church are being offered an extraordinary opportunity this weekend – the chance to come face to face with the church’s historic weathercock before it is returned to its rightful place high above the village.

Following careful restoration after being toppled and damaged by the storm of New Year’s Eve 2024, the magnificent cockerel has come home and is currently on display inside the church. Next week it will once again be lifted onto the church tower, where it is expected to watch over Hewelsfield for many years to come.

For most generations, a church weathercock can only ever be seen from hundreds of feet away. To stand beside one, admire its craftsmanship and appreciate its size and character is a remarkably rare experience.

The weathercock forms a special attraction at Hewelsfield Church’s Flower Festival, taking place this Saturday and Sunday, 11.00am–5.00pm. Alongside beautiful floral displays celebrating ‘English Country Gardens’, visitors can enjoy homemade refreshments, explore this much-loved historic building and discover the story behind the iconic cockerel.

Why not suggest a name for the newly restored weathercock?! Maybe something traditional, humorous or inspired by local history?

“This is probably the only time many of us will ever be able to stand next to our church’s weathercock,” said organisers. “Once it’s back on the tower, we’ll all be looking up at it for years to come. We wanted everyone to have the chance to see this wonderful piece of our heritage up close before it takes its place in the Gloucestershire skyline once again.”

With the weathercock soon returning to its lofty perch, this weekend offers a unique moment in the church’s history that is unlikely to be repeated for decades.
