Our Lady’s Church Hall Hereford is overjoyed to announce the award of a grant from Herefordshire Council towards the cost of redevelopment of its much-loved Community Space.
Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, Our Lady’s Community Space is a vital hub that supports more than 80 people each week with emergency assistance and practical advice. It also plays host to a wide variety of local groups and organisations, including the neighbouring primary school, Newton Farm Community Association, the Keralan Indian community, Citizens Advice, Age UK Wyvern, and Ta**us Healthcare Group.
Constructed in 1957 as the original parish church, the building is now showing its age. The community space falls far short of modern standards. There is limited disabled access, only two small outdated toilets, a cramped and uninviting entrance, and a heating system that is both inefficient and unreliable. With little insulation, the building is expensive to run and far from environmentally sustainable.
Over the past two years, work has been underway planning the transformation of this valued space for the benefit of the whole community. The ambitious plans include new toilets and kitchens, improved accessibility for those with physical and mental impairments, a modern and sustainable heating system, and upgraded environmental features. Excitingly, partnerships with local organisations will also see the surrounding green space developed into a welcoming haven for wildlife alongside initiatives to improve active and low carbon travel.
While the fundraising goal of £750,000 is still ahead, this generous grant from Herefordshire Council marks a significant step forward, bringing the parish closer to creating a modern, welcoming, and sustainable community space in Hereford.
