Our Meeting House has stood for 300 years in Hemel Hempstead Old Town, behind the Old Bell in the High Street. The Friend is a weekly magazine in which Friends speak to each other and to the wider world, offering their insight, ideas, news, nurture and inspiration.

Nurturing Quaker community, each issue offers a space for Friends to share their concerns, and to support each other in faith and witness.

This week Tony DeSouza shares thoughts on the far right:

‘Our light is an inner light that cannot be extinguished.’| The Friend

Look out for ++HANGING BY A THREAD ++ a show with which Marcus Decker, talented musician, Quaker and climate activist, is touring to raise funds for his legal fees as he fights deportation, is a moving, inspiring, highly enjoyable experience.

Marcus, who climbed above the Dartford Crossing with Just Stop Oil received a two years and seven months sentence. During his incarceration he started attending Quaker Meetings at the prison chaplaincy.

He is a gifted musician and story teller who sings his way through his story of phenomenal bravery and endurance above that bridge. You will enjoy the human details from prison from chess pieces carved from soap and a prison choir to a thriving tomato plant grown in his cell and onion cooked in a kettle.

With great skill and sensitivity Marcus recounts encounters that changed the minds of prisoners and staff while opening his eyes to what prisoners go through and how they survive.

(Marcus recently made an appearance at a private event in Hemel Hempstead and St Albans XR will be trying to host the show asap. )

To donate to support the ongoing campaign to keep Marcus in this country with his partner and family, see https://chuffed.org/project/q9rje9q70fltbjn

My partner Marcus is being threatened with deportation after an act of peaceful protest against the government's inaction on the climate crisis. He was just trying to sound the alarm.

Wood End Burial Ground Visit

Around a dozen Friends convened on the historic burial site on Saturday 20 June. It looked beautiful with a fine array of summer plants in shades of mauve, gold and green....

Quakers stand against all plotters and fighters

Quaker UN Offices in Geneva and New York have expressed deep concern regarding recent military operations carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as subsequent acts of retaliation " Every human life is precious and deserving of dignity, and we grieve for those who have already been lost to this cycle of violence. It is our deeply held belief that lasting peace can never be achieved through violence, and we urge all parties to seek peace through dialogue and engagement."...
