Please note that volunteers delivered a survey at the weekend to properties in the parish of Helmdon on the possibility of a new village shop. Apparently the surveys are being delivered in batches, so if you haven't received yours yet it will be on its way soon.

Please also note that the survey delivered at the weekend is nothing whatsoever to do with the planning proposal opposite the school. The only connection is that both things mentioned the word "shop".

A planning application has been submitted by developers to West Northamptonshire Council for construction of 26 dwellings, a local shop, car parking, a local equipped area for play (LEAP), public open space, landscaping and associated infrastructure works on Priory Field opposite Helmdon Primary School. A link to the application is in the comments.👇

The "temporary" barriers near Jeff's Bridge, which had been in place for nearly a year, have been replaced today by West Northamptonshire Highways with a nice new post and rail fence. Looks good. 👍

🏛️ Love Helmdon? Join our team! 🏛️

Are you looking for a rewarding local role where you can give back to the community while earning a professional salary? Helmdon Parish Council is looking for a new Clerk to the Council!

We are looking for a professional officer to join our team to represent the interests of our village, providing management, administrative assistance, and objective advice.

👩‍🏫 What’s the role?

Business & Finance: You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the council’s business and finances.

Meeting Support: You will prepare councillors for their decision-making roles and attend evening meetings, currently held on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Flexible Working: This is a work-from-home position for 11 hours per week, offering great flexibility.

🧑‍💼 Who are we looking for?

You don’t need prior local government experience—we value professional standards and integrity over specific sector qualifications. We will provide full training and support you in obtaining the Certificate in Local Council Administration (CILCA).

You’ll be a great fit if:

You are highly computer literate (especially with Word, Excel, and Email).

You have excellent communication skills and a friendly, positive outlook.

You are organized and ready to help put council decisions into practice.

The Details

Salary: £16.35 - £17.85 per hour, plus a 5% employer pension contribution.

Closing Date: 5:00 p.m. on Thursday 14 May 2026.

Interviews: To be held the evening of Thursday 21 May 2026.

See https://helmdonparishcouncil.gov.uk/news/vacancy-clerk-to-helmdon-parish-council/ for details of how to apply.

The Wrong Time for Christmas!

We appreciate that these people took the time to pick up after their dog (and use these fetching purple and blue bags!), but tying them to the branches like unusual festive decorations is a step too far.

The only place for these bags is in a designated dog bin or carried home. A "biodegradable" sticker on a bag doesn't mean it magically disappears in a hedge—it just preserves the waste inside.

Let’s keep our green spaces beautiful, not "purple-baubled." Please take your bags with you. Your community, and our hedges, will thank you.

COMMUNITY ALERT: Aggressive DOOR-TO-DOOR SELLERS ('NOTTINGHAM KNOCKERS')

Residents are advised that individuals commonly known as 'Nottingham Knockers' were operating aggressively within Helmdon on Monday. They have now moved on, but we need to remain vigilant.

These sellers often carry large holdalls filled with cleaning products (mops, tea towels) and claim to be on a rehabilitation scheme or ex-offender program. While they may seem legitimate, they are often linked to organized crime and use these visits to 'case' properties for future burglaries or rogue trader scams. Reports indicate that their sales tactics were forceful and intimidating, causing distress to some residents.

What to do now:

1. Check for 'Casing' Marks: Please check your gateposts, pavement, or walls near your front door for unusual chalk marks or symbols. If you see any, please take a photo and then immediately wash them off.

2. Report to Police (101): We encourage everyone who encountered them or has CCTV/doorbell footage of them or their vehicle to report it to Northamptonshire Police on 101. This helps the police build a intelligence picture of their activity and increase patrols in our area.

3. Check on Neighbours: If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours, please check in on them. These groups often target the vulnerable using pressure selling tactics.

Important Reminders for future visits:

• You are under NO obligation to open the door to any stranger.
• Polite but firm refusal is always okay.
• Ask to see a valid Pedlar’s Certificate (which is legal ID). Company ID cards are not sufficient.
• If you feel threatened or they refuse to leave, call 999.

Let's work together to keep our village safe.
