Face to Face by Ron Scurfield

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Think about it.. God allowed Jesus to die so that we could be as holy as He is. - But still we fall. We still do things we shouldn’t do and say things which are better left unsaid.

Are we even now trapped in a web of this sinful world by confusion and guilt? Are we still struggling to break free from our self centred selfish ways? The battle continues. The Bible makes it very clear: ‘The wages of sin is death’ (Romans 6:23). But Jesus paid the price in full with His own life. The transaction was completed when He cried out in a loud voice, “It is finished!” (John 19:30).

The truth is the price doesn’t have to be paid twice. It’s already been paid, once and for all, with the blood of Christ. We don’t have to continue struggling to be accepted by God. Our freedom has been bought. The deal is done.

“Therefore, come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” (2 Corinthians 6:17). We need to step out of our past, or even our present, into the freedom of God’s forgiveness. It costs nothing. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1John 1:9).

The cross stands eternal, with no time limit. The case is closed. So how about our continuing nagging guilt? What about those feelings of self condemnation that gnaw away at our conscience? - They must be ignored; disregarded as false witnesses, and handed over to the One who paid the price. Repentance is the key, along with surrender and submission. Then follows acceptance and belonging. Together they go hand in hand.

What about the sins I’m going to commit tomorrow? “We all like sheep have gone astray..” It’s all paid for, by the blood. “When I see the blood I will pass over you..“ (Exodus 12:13).

“It is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” (Romans 10:10). No matter what we’ve done in the past it’s covered by the blood.“You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

There’s more: “..we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18). As we consider the grace of God, and turn from our sinful ways a transformation takes place. We gradually become more like Him. When God looks at us He sees the Cross. When we look at the Cross we see Jesus, our redemption and salvation are complete.

“When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:4). “Now we see only a reflection.., then we shall see face to face” (1 Corinthians 13:12). Can we believe it? - We must, because it’s true.

Blessings Beyond Measure
by Ron Scurfield

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace..” (Numbers 6:24-26). These are the words spoken by God to His people through Moses. “..So they will put my name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them” (Numbers 6:27).

The blessings of God are also valid to everyone who professes the name of Christ and receives Him as Lord, “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26). Therefore this is a direct word from God for you, and for all who would receive Him. It is not about religious background, or strict obedience to the law. It’s about faith, as we personally receive the truth of the promise, and walk in it. The blessings of the Lord are not of this world. They are way beyond the world’s understanding.

What more can we ask? What more do we need? Nothing the world has to offer can match or come anywhere near the blessings God wants to bestow upon His people. The question is, what do we do with them? How do we live in them? How can we share them with others? Is this not what the world so desperately needs today; perhaps now even more than ever before?

God’s promises still stand. They’re unbreakable. They are eternal. But we must personally receive them. The blessings and protection of the Lord must be recognised as we walk in His fulness. We must turn away from all worldly temptations and fix our eyes upon Christ’s presence at all times. Circumstances make no difference to the truth of the promise. No matter what we are called to go through, He is our guide, or protector and our encouragement. His Light shines upon every aspect of our life and His mercy endures for ever. Know this on the inside, whatever takes place on the outside. We’re wrapped in a cocoon of grace, the undeserved favour of God. His love is our constant covering as we walk under His protection, and the peace of God, which is beyond all our understanding constantly fills our mind with the truth of Christ. The joy of the Lord is our strength, and our faith spurs us on in the face of the impossible. Without faith it is impossible to please God, and faith is knowing the truth and walking in it. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth” (John 14:6).

God’s real blessing is in a transformed life and a renewed relationship with Him, not merely by external rewards but a deep, inner peace which is the foundation on which we can build the character of Jesus.

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God” (Revelation 21:3).

The Big Yellow Bulldozer by Ron Scurfield

Scripture: “And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way.. But only the redeemed will walk there, and the ransomed of the Lord will return.” Isaiah 35:8,9-10.

I looked up and saw a bright yellow bulldozer; an enormous machine gleaming and sparkling in the bright sunshine. It was moving steadily towards a huge mountain of rubbish, stretching into the distance as far as the eye could see, and beyond. The bulldozer lowered its blade and began to push its way through the mass of rotting and decayed garbage, like a massive snow plough. It didn’t falter, or even shudder, at the huge task that lay ahead as it relentlessly pushed on, carving a wide channel through the Mountain of Despair.

This unholy mountain was composed of every conceivable kind of filth and degradation. There were boxes of corruption and lies, and masses of shame and guilt. There were cans of deception and rolls of slander. There was poverty, greed, pride, dishonesty, idolatry, and every kind of sin. There was sickness and death. But the bulldozer pushed on, slowly and steadily, casting aside everything in its path.

On the top of the vehicle was a tall golden cross, standing high and prominent, gleaming in the reflected sunlight, like a beacon guiding the way through the mire. As the vehicle channelled its way onward, it created a pathway of lush green grass in its wake, soft and vibrant - a highway of holiness carved through the squalor.

Behind this vehicle was a great army of believers with banners held high in triumph, all singing and shouting and declaring the victory of Christ. “Blessing and honour and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb..” (Revelation 5:3). Jubilation and deep, heartfelt worship arose heavenward, as the people marched triumphantly behind the trundling vehicle. It was like the return of a victorious army, declaring victory over their enemies and giving glory to their King. There were peoples of every nation, creed and colour dancing and rejoicing unashamedly following the cross.

The procession moved steadily on, not in haste but in the certainty of victory, as the bulldozer swept aside all the weapons of the enemy, now rendered useless by the power of the cross.

I can only say what I saw. This was for me, a powerful message from God. But you too can have your own bulldozer. It’s ready and waiting. This of course represents the sovereignty of God, supreme and holy, and can be seen in many forms according to our perception. Perhaps it’s in the deadly sling of David, which brought his enemy, Goliath, humiliation and defeat. It could be the pillar of fire that carved a way through the darkness during Israel’s forty years in the wilderness. It may be in the strength of Samson who brought down the temple of Dagon (Judges 16:29-30). There’s the courage and faith of Daniel that closed the lions’ mouths, or the angel who walked in the furness of the Most High God, and kept them safe. Whichever you choose, be sure to carry before you the cross of Jesus Christ, symbol of His death and His ascension to glory, high and lifted up for all to see, the symbol of hope and triumph

The battle that disarmed all principalities and powers has already been won. Victory has ben secured; eternity is prepared so that we can walk triumphantly with Him in the way of holiness.

I was looking through some old photos and as I looked at them, I began to wonder how quickly life marches on and at times seems to leave us behind. We get pushed and pulled in all directions, not really knowing or stopping to pay attention to what we are actually doing.
The Bible says
“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This passage emphasises that God appoints specific times for events like birth, death, planting, healing, and dancing. Only The Lord decides we do not.

Maybe we need to stop and take life in before it passes us by. In Psalm 46:10 it says, “Be still and know that I am God!”

Why not stop for a moment or two this week and consider how you feel and look at how your life is going. Look at what is going right or wrong and see how much you include God in your life.

The Way To God by Ron Scurfield
Scripture: “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” John 17:3 (NIV)

Do I know Him? - I’m not sure.

Do I want to know Him? - Yes I do, but it’s more than that. I long to know Him. I hunger and thirst for the living God; to have a personal relationship with Him so that we can be be together and walk together. So that I can speak with Him, pour out my heart and my troubles to Him, knowing that He listens and He cares.

Does He not hear me when I cry out to Him? Surely He does. “Call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you” (Jeremiah 29:12). What would I say? What would I ask Him? For me it would be that I am aware of His presence more closely day by day, and hear his voice and his direction. To put myself under his shield of protection and know that I am safe; to live not in the uncertainty of myself, with all my doubts and fears, but under His covering where I can have complete trust and confidence in him that He will guide me.

This would not be to satisfy my own selfish pride but to fulfill the purposes that God has prepared for me. Not hesitant, wondering if I am doing the right thing, or going in the right direction, but with the confidence He gives me. “My Lord, my strength and my fortress..” (Jeremiah 16:19). That I might know His purpose for my life, and fulfill it.

But this is all about me again. I need to know who He is. Not just know about Him, but to know Him. “To know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

So what’s my problem? I have already received Him as my Lord and Saviour. I know He lives within me, and we can communicate with each other. “Call upon me and I will answer’ says the Lord’ (Jeremiah 33:3). I can speak to Him and He hears me and speaks to me by His Spirit. The problem is, I don’t hear - or I don’t listen.

I need to spend time with Him, sitting at His feet and searching His Word, open to receive all He wants to give me. I’m looking for Him beyond myself, but He’s right here with me; the guidance of His Spirit, and that still small voice, His compassion and His love.

I need to open myself up to receive it. Break down all self inflicted barriers of guilt and worthlessness. Receive Him as He is as He receives me just as I am. I must take Him at His word without hesitation and immerse myself in His presence.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).

Narrow is The Way

Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to” (Luke 13:24).

If only..? Have we ever felt that way, when things didn’t turn out as we had hoped? When something happened to spoil our plans? So near but yet so far. Disappointment comes in many guises, often followed by a feeling of failure? Do we long for things to be different?

Have we stopped to consider God? What is His will through all our frustrations and failures? Where are we heading? Are we drifting down the road of life with or without a plan? Or perhaps we’re blown along by the wind of chance, towards a destination unknown. Do we find ourselves in a place which is not of our choosing, aware of the direction we are heading and wondering if this is right? And where is God in all this?

Jesus was in torment in The Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). He wasn’t thinking of His own wellbeing. His life on earth was centred around His Father and the fulfilment of His mission. This was what He came for. This was what He had to do, to fulfil the will of God.

What is our motivation? What drives us on? Where are we going? - And do we actually want to go? Are we content to let our life take its course and see where it leads? To go with the flow? We may be in the driving seat but who’s actually driving?

God is concerned. He has a personal interest in the path we are taking. Ultimately the choice is ours. Basically we can do whatever we like, but there are consequences. Are we God conscious or self conscious? We have the opportunity to go along with God’s will by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But we must “enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. Small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:14). There is only one way to joy and fulfilment, leading to eternal life. ‘The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday’ (Proverbs 4:18).The alternative way - the way of the world - leads to death and destruction, littered with pain and confusion. ‘The way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom; they do not know what makes them stumble’ (Proverbs 4:19).

We must take a firm hold of the reins controlling our life, setting our sights on Jesus, making positive and deliberate decisions. Otherwise we are blown off course. “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19)..

That’s the way it is, whether we like it or not. The choice is ours.. “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12). It’s as simple as that.
