Calvary Portsmouth

Calvary Portsmouth Calvary Portsmouth is a fellowship of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ who have been meeting in South East Hampshire since 1994. We meet at 10.30am.

Sunday mornings are a time of worship and study of the Bible. Simply teaching the Bible, simply. Accepting literally Jesus' words 'I come - in the volume of the book it is written of Me' (Heb 10:7), we make a detailed study of all of the Bible to discover more about Him. Bible studies form a major part of our Sunday morning services, along with singing our praises to God, praying to Him and readin

g a Psalm together. Our fellowship welcomes all who want to find out more about Jesus, whether you are just enquiring or have known Him for years. We meet at 10.30 at Barncroft School Havant

Romans 12:21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (NIV)

Epistle to the Romans 12:21

Paul writes, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Sometimes people hurt us. Sometimes we’re the ones who fall short. Either way, God doesn’t call us to answer pain with more pain. He calls us to respond with grace.

Choosing kindness when it’s undeserved isn’t weakness — it’s Christ shining through us.

Let goodness have the final word. 🤍

Last Sunday, Pastor Barry concluded our study of Ezekiel chapter 22 by referring to Petra’s powerful song “Stand in the Gap.”
The song echoes the message of the chapter, reminding us of God’s call for someone willing to stand in the gap and intercede.

Ezekiel 20:49
“Then said I, Ah Lord God! they say of me,
Doth he not speak parables?”
â–Ľ
As Pastor Barry explained in his message last Sunday, this verse captures the frustration of a prophet whose plain warning was being dismissed as mere storytelling.

The people didn't want to hear the literal warning.
They accused him of being "too metaphorical" or "too wordy”.

It is quite astounding that even then, people struggled to accept the literal fulfilment of God's word, preferring to dismiss it as "just a story" or a "fairy tale”.

This is despite the fact God ALWAYS says what He means and means what He says!

Barry’s message from last Sunday on Ezekiel Chapters 19 & 20 is now live on our website!
https://www.calvaryportsmouth.co.uk/sermons/ezekiel-ch19-ch20-to-v44/
It begins with a helpful visual overview — a timeline stretching from 850 to 425 BC, setting the stage for the period in which Ezekiel spoke.
From there, Barry explored the striking contrast between “The Path of Life” and “The Path of Death,” drawing from Psalm 1 to frame Ezekiel’s message.
We then looked at two lamentations spoken by the Lord Himself, followed by a sobering moment in Israel’s history: the end of the ordinary human dynasty of King David.
Chapter 20 offered a sweeping journey:
A history of rebellion, marked by God’s patience and Israel’s repeated turning away
Followed by the return of a portion of the Israelites to the Promised Land
Barry then connected Scripture to relatively modern history, touching on the Diaspora and the accounts of travellers heading to the Land — including writers like Mark Twain and explorers such as Charles Warren.
The message concluded with a forward-looking hope:
the future creation and restoration of Mount Zion, a reminder of God’s promises yet to unfold.
A rich, thoughtful sermon — and well worth listening to if you’re following our study of Ezekiel.

"For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the Lord." — Habakkuk 2:14

Quietly. Steadily. Surely.
His glory is reaching every shore, every heart, every hidden place.

Even when the world feels vast and uncertain,
God’s presence is deeper still—covering all with hope and light.
— Habakkuk 2:14

We are currently studying the Book of Ezekiel with Pastor Barry, and this timeline has been incredibly helpful in placing his ministry in its historical setting.
Ezekiel prophesied during a turbulent period leading up to — and during — the Babylonian exile. Seeing him alongside the kings of Judah and the other prophets helps us understand not only when he spoke, but why his message carried such urgency.
Context matters.
When we trace the fall of Jerusalem, the exile, and the overlapping ministries of prophets like Jeremiah and Daniel, Ezekiel’s words come alive in a whole new way.
If you’re following along with us, this visual overview may help you connect the bigger biblical story to the specific chapters we’re exploring each week.
