The Striking Competition went well yesterday….then this morning at service ringing, the third’s rope snapped.

You couldn’t make it up!

Tower Captain Andy will be repairing it and we’ll get it refitted in time for practice on Wednesday night 🔔

On Saturday 8th March from 14:00, we will be hosting a Striking Competition for the Derbyshire area.

Teams of ringing bands from across the county will be descending upon St Peter’s to show off their best quality ringing, so it should make nice listening for those of you in earshot.

Enjoy!

New rope day!

After a good 6 month wait, our new tenor rope arrived today and I wasn’t about to hang about getting it fitted.

It feels quite different to ring on a new rope that isn’t as worn as the old one. Regardless, a nice shiny rope looks good if nothing else!

Last week saw the tenor’s rope snap below the sally. A new rope has been on order for some time, but sadly isn’t quite ready yet.

To keep us going, we contacted the Derbyshire Diocesan Association of Bell ringers - most of us are members of it. The DDA helps with all manner of things, one of which is the provision of spare ropes - one of which is now fitted.

If you heard the tenor ringing at around 19:30, that’s why!

Thank you so much to everyone who came to visit us today. Some fantastic questions were asked and the enthusiasm to learn about bells and bell ringing was brilliant!

That’s a new one for us! The rope jumped off the wheel on the second tonight.

This is usually caused by the rope becoming too slack as the bell is being rung. Keeping the rope taught is an important aspect of ringing technique, though our ring of bells are very forgiving!
