A wonderful 7 mile WI walk in Wensleydale, from Jervaulx, round to Thornton Steward, through the parkland at Danby Hall and back on the river path from Coverbridge. A lovely sunny day but a chilly east wind. Honesty box tea and coffee at Thornton Steward village hall was very welcome.

Janet Wright talked to us this evening about her changing career path from teacher to pub and restaurant manager. She and her husband worked for Brewers fayre pubs and managed the
Nevill Crest and Gun in Eridge. Then went on to manage and train staff on the Isle of Wight, in Norfolk, Kent, Woking and Hastings. In 10 years they moved 6 times, living “over the shop” and dealing with lots of difficult customers and staff.

At this evening’s meeting we were visited by the CEO of Jennyruth Workshops, Nicky and her daughter Lucy. Based at Red House Farm, near Ripon the workshop makes quirky bird boxes and feeders, bug hotels, coasters, wrapping paper, trugs among other things. The workers are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential while normalising any disability.
Currently working on a series
of books about what it’s like to be autistic or have a disability. Everyone works in a supported environment to fulfil their abilities where any disability is immaterial. They have around 48 workers and 19 staff open every day between 8.30 and 4.30.

We had an excellent talk this evening given by John Mason FGS (Fellow of the Gemological Society) from Morphets Fine Art Auctioneers. He talked about all sorts of jewellery through the ages and all the different cuts of the stones. Very interesting.
