'God rest you, q***r and questioning,
Your anxious hearts be still'

Alternative words to a traditional carol by Jeffrey Wilson

20/11/2021

Today is the day when we remember those members of the trans community who have lost their lives to hate.

We cry to you;

Lord God, full of compassion,
See us as we mourn,
Hold us as we weep

Throughout Pride Month we continue to pray for peace and justice for all who identify as LGBTQ+. For marriage equality, for protection of trans rights, and for the acknowledgement of the image of God found in every person, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. This prayer is taken from 'Waymarks' by Peter Millar. "God of compassion, you made us in your own image and our prayer is that each day you will illuminate our minds, enlarge our awareness and free us from prejudice, so that we cease to marginalise, judge, and condemn others because of their sexual orientation. And, along the way, help us to examine with honesty our own inner contradictions, sexual fears and emotional longings." If you are a menmber, associate member or young adult group member then you can continue the work of justice and peace, wholeness and reconciliation for LGBTQ+ people by becoming involved in our LGBTQ+ common concern network. To do this first find out more about our common concern networks on the concerns page of our website and then contact us to get connected. https://iona.org.uk/about-us/concerns/ (Photo provided by William Gibson)

๐ŸŒˆ Happy Pride Month friends! ๐ŸŒˆ

We'll be sharing some of our LGBT resources over the next few weeks. First up, check out this intro to Q***r Theology our friend Peterson Toscano wrote for us a few years ago: https://buff.ly/3wMb07P

"I consider Q***r Theology as falling into two distinct typesโ€” defensive theology and affirming theology. It is easy to get caught up in the first. When people use the Bible to attack us and malign us, then we feel we must defend ourselves. Opponents of LGBTQ people typically draw from a handful of no more than six short passages taken out of context in order to condemn us. Much Q***r Theology has been designed to counteract these arguments.

For me, Q***r Theology requires going to the text with imagination- not to make stuff up, but rather to see what is already hidden right in front of our eyes. We have been trained to look away from gender and sexual minorities in the world and in the text. The job of the theologian is to look deeper."
