Pope Leo, the Poor and the SVDP
We would like to share a few thoughts on the work of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Like the Church itself we are an international society. Where you find the Church, you will find St Vincent de Paul.
Our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has recently published a document called On Love for the Poor. It focuses on our duty to serve the poor and also to understand that it is in serving those in need that we develop our spiritual lives. As members of the SVDP , we feel very encouraged by the words of Pope Leo. Following the example of our founder, Frédéric Ozanam, we meet as parishioners and seek to respond to those in need within our parishes. Each parish group is called a ‘conference’. Very often the work which we do is not noticed by others. This is the way it has to be. It is important that we give necessary assistance to those who need it. But this also entails respecting the dignity of the people involved. Sometimes people need someone to talk to. This is a strong part of our work. Although we spend a lot of time and energy assisting people, for example with food or furniture, we try to keep in mind that we are more than dispensers of things — we are human beings who respond to the needs of other human beings. We do this regardless of their religion, nationality or culture.
As the Society of St Vincent de Paul, in the Diocese of Motherwell, we are deeply committed to the work of serving those in need and we have found encouragement and strength in this recent document of Pope Leo. And, again, we are able to do all the things we do because of your support. So, we like to think of ourselves as Your St Vincent de Paul. There is one sentence of the Holy Father which will help us in our work and continue to serve those in need. He says this: ‘Through your work, your efforts to change unjust social structures or your simple, heartfelt gesture of closeness and support, the poor will come to realize that Jesus’ words are addressed personally to each of them: “I have loved you.”’
"We should assist the poor in every way and do it both by ourselves and by enlisting the help of others" .
Vincent de Paul
Yours sincerely
