Many who have journeyed with us in the past will be familiar with the significance of the welcome of young (and not-so-young) people in Taizé. Unsurprisingly, the Covid-related shutdowns have drastically impacted upon the operating income of the association. As a non-profit organisation, this is difficult to absorb beyond a certain point. If you are able, please consider donating to help ensure continuity of their activities for the future.

Recently we took part in some research regarding the impact of Covid-19 on religious life in the UK. As a tangent to that, the idea arose to look at how pilgrimage to Taizé from the UK has been affected during the past year. If you’ve taken part in any Taizé activities last year – either travelling there, or participating in any of the online meetings – Eleanor would be delighted to hear from you. It would be great if you could also share this in any local groups or with people you know who may be interested. Thanks!

She writes:

Bric-19 are making pandemic histories of religious life and experience under Covid-19. Through documenting, analysing and understanding the new ways that people are coming together to fulfil their spiritual needs or observances, our findings will help communities of all faiths become stronger and more resilient for the future. You can find out more about our project, our funders, and our partners here: https://bric19.mmu.ac.uk/

We invite you to contribute your memories and experiences of visiting, or connecting with, the Taizé community (Burgundy, France) in 2020, either in person or online (or both). Your reflections will help us understand how Covid-19 has affected pilgrimage and ideas of religious community. Interviews would be conducted over the phone or via teams/zoom and would last approximately 30 minutes. To learn more about participating and what that involves, please contact Dr Eleanor O’Keeffe at [email protected]

For a few years now we have had a house tradition of counting the days of Advent (and through to New Year’s Eve) with a set of five candles on our dinner table, by a mathematical method.

This year we’ve scaled it up a little, with five lamps in our front window, controlled by a Raspberry Pi. Tomorrow the first lamp will be lit, and every following day a different combination of lamps will be illuminated, until finally all five will light on New Year’s Eve.

On each hour there will be a visual “chime” with the hour being briefly displayed by the same method, before returning to displaying the date.

See if you (or perhaps the kids) can figure out the logic used to display the numbers. If you know, don’t post it here – so that others can guess. If you want to check your logic, you could predict the next day’s lights here if you like!

We’re at 78 Beech Road (the Lunesdale Community house). You should be able to see the lights from High Road if you look through Houghton Court. Perhaps wander past on your way to one of the houses in the Halton Village Living Advent Calendar 2020?
