It was an absolute joy for 26 of us from St. Hilda’s to make the journey to York to celebrate Ascension with our brothers and sisters of St. Constantine’s in York.

St. Constantine’s had been given permission to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in a chapel of the historic York Minster.

As we head towards Holy Week - as we look to enter into Jerusalem with Christ; like the Twelve Disciples, we too might be both amazed and afraid when we consider that we are going to Jerusalem, not to watch Christ die for us, but rather so that we might die with Christ.

The Gospel is that Jesus died for us. But this does not mean that he died INSTEAD of us, but rather that he died AHEAD of us.

If we want resurrection, if we want the life of heaven, if we want the life of God - we must first embrace the cross. We must die to this world, we must follow Christ.

This is what Great Lent has been teaching us, and training us for - to enter into Jerusalem with Christ.

Let us be ready to ask, as St. Mary of Egypt did - what must I do?

Glory to God.

Why do Orthodox Christians fast?

It is not because we dislike food.

It is not because we dislike ourselves.

It is not punishment - it is medicine!

Fasting and prayer are a powerful combination. If we only fast - we only end up empty, hungry ad grumpy. If we only pray, we never rid ourselves of our passions. But when we fast AND pray - we empty ourselves of passions, and fill ourselves with Christ!

Enjoy Great Lent - it is for your salvation!

Many christians, having become unmoored from the Church and Holy Tradition have found themselves unknowingly slipping into Gnosticism - the belief that the material world cannot be a vehicle of grace and the energies of God.

It is true that we are not just a body, but neither are we just a soul, we are body and soul; these are not disconnected realities.

Our bodies are not unimportant, they are not ‘meat machines’ to carry our soul; the aim of salvation is not to ‘leave our bodies behind’ and ascend to some purely spiritual existence. Our bodies are given to us to serve God, and to grow in salvation. Of course we can use them for evil - but the point is - what we do with our bodies has a real effect on our souls.

This is why in Holy Orthodoxy there is such an emphasis on ‘physical worship’ - all of our senses are engaged by the Church to draw us to Christ. We make metanias, we bow, prostrate, make the sign of the cross, and process.

The icons, vestments and incense of the church is not incidental, nor is it distraction - it is participation, it is repentance, it is medicine for our souls.

Please listen to Fr. Deacon Alexey’s beautiful homily from the Sunday of Orthodoxy and meditate on his words.

The Final Judgement.

There are a lot of wrong ideas about the Final Judgment - and they all revolve around the word 'deserve'.

"we will all get what we deserve - if we're good, we'll get Heaven; if we're bad, we'll get Hell"

or

"I don't deserve heaven - but Jesus will 'deserve it' for me"

But God's Judgement is not about deserving - it's about belonging, just as we see in Our Lord's teaching of the sheep and the goats.

No one deserves heaven but some of us will belong there - which will be seen in our works.

We can’t earn heaven, but we can prepare for it. We can live our life in a way that means that when we get there it is not completely alien to us.

We don't deserve heaven.
We can't earn heaven.
But we can belong there.

This is what the Church is for - to be shaped and changed into citizens of heaven, so that we are prepared for that Final Judgement.
