Following the previous photo of the 8 soldiers. The Duke of Wellington's Regiment Association based at Bankfield Museum, kindly paid for the double grave and the regimental crest on the headstone. Here are a few photos taken today (Saturday 6th June 2026). As we were strimming in the rain, cutting down the long grass which arrives this time every year. While most of the graveyard is now covered in 4ft high grass, by mid August we will have it all cut down, and by mid September, the graveyard will look like a bowling green with graves! Volunteers with their own petrol or battery strimmers are welcome to join us. page – Friends of Christ Church Pellon Graveyard Halifax.

Here is the full photo of the small photo you see on Friends of Christ Church Pellon Graveyard Halifax (page). It is of an unmarked double grave of eight soldiers who died between 1880 and 1900. They were based at Wellesley Barracks and belonged to the former regiments of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Here with the volunteers, and the photo taken 2 years ago. I'm the guy (David Ramanauskas) saying the prayers over the grave. I found this grave by chance researching the graves of soldiers at Christ Church Mount Pellon in Halifax. They were all ordinary soldiers, because if they had been officers, they would most likely have had at least a headstone and probably the kerb stones around the grave.

Here is a grave of two sisters who lived at Birks Hall.
One of the sisters Catherine was married to Sargeant Henry Nobel, who served in the 20th Regiment of Foot, and whose name is on this headstone.
Henry served in the Napoleonic Wars and was involved in six separate battles, before spending eleven years guarding Napoleon on St. Hellena, (just in case he tried to escape and start his troubles again!).
Henry retired after 25 years of service and returned to live in Leeds, died in 1860 age 71, and had one daughter, Hannah, who was born during his military service in India.
ALSO, here is a reminder that as Christ Church Mount Pellon will sadly be closing on the 28th of June 2026. This page will also be closing. Following the recent announcement, we would like to remind everyone that there is still time to come along and join us for our Sunday morning services throughout June.

This coming Sunday, we will be holding a Joint Service with St John, Warley and St Hilda, Halifax. We look forward to welcoming you all.

NEW FACEBOOK PAGE. As most of you will now know the sad news that Christ Church Mount Pellon is closing as a church.

The last Sunday Morning service at 10:30 will be on Sunday 28th of June 2026.

There will probably be an official service to close the church for public worship at some point, but we don't have the details yet.

As for the graveyard. Four years ago a team of volunteers from the church and local community began meeting on a Saturday morning to clear the 2226 graves of the 6ft high forest of brambles and shrubs covering the graves.

At the moment, we have a reduced team of volunteers (you might call us the skeleton staff!), just at the time of year when the grass grows up to 4ft high. But over the coming months we will keep on doing our best until by the end of September it will be completely clear of all the graves until May 2027 - when we repeat the process!

So, to help keep the community of Pellon informed (along with our friends from overseas!) I have set up a new page. Here is a link to our page -

Visitors to our graveyard often ask to see the first grave. Here it is. Phoebe Oliver was born in 1819 and died at the age of 35. She was the first person to be buried in our graveyard on the 6th of November 1854. Her grave was hidden by thick brambles for over 20 years until our volunteers at Christ Church and the community cleared the area. The church and graveyard are open for visitors every Saturday throughout the summer, on Saturday mornings from 10am to 12.30. Why not drop in for a chat? The kettle is always on!
