Calderdale Interfaith invites you to our Women, Faith and Leadership Conference, an inclusive event for people of all genders, all faiths, and no faith. We are pleased to have a range of speakers from a variety of backgrounds, and look forward to exploring:

• What is leadership?
• What particular skills and attitudes do women bring to leadership?
• What is different and unique about women’s leadership?

In the afternoon we will be offering a number of workshops for you to participate in, led by local community groups.

Keynote Speakers will include:

Zara Mohammed

Zara Mohammed graduated with an LLM in Human Rights Law from the University of Strathclyde and is based in Glasgow. She was elected as the youngest and first female Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain in January 2021. Zara has contributed to a number of public consultations including “Muslim women and employment” and “Islamophobia”. She is passionate about empowering young people and supporting women in her community.

Dr Diana Tremayne

Dr Diana Tremayne is a lecturer at Leeds Beckett University and is also a local councillor. She is a member of the Church of England General Synod and helps to run an interfaith group where she lives. She will speak from her own experience to try to get us thinking about what we mean by leadership and how our own faith perspectives might help to shape this.

Supriya Nagarajan

Supriya is the founder of Manasamitra. She is a singer-composer, trained since the age of 5 in Carnatic (classical South Indian) vocal music in Bombay (Mumbai). Since setting up Manasamitra in 2005 she has collaborated with musicians from different genres and disciplines. She strives to create inclusive music which explores the relationship between her practice and her country of residence, now called home.

The event can count towards 5 hours of CPD

Yesterday morning we were at Halifax Minster for the first debate in a new “Minster Series”, intended to engage young people in debate about a wide variety of topics relating to life and faith. This one was about Faith and Politics. We were privileged to be joined by the Shadow Minister for Faith, Sarah Owen, as well as Halifax MP, Holly Lynch. Also on the debate panel were Perveen Hussain, Vice Chair of Calderdale Interfaith, Andy Williams, Baptist Pastor at the Blackley Centre, Ann Kingstone, one of the councillors for Skircoat Ward, and Hilary Barber, Canon at Halifax Minster.

Following an inspiring talk by the Shadow Minister, debate focused on how to lead to celebration of diversity in society instead of mere tolerance of it. We discussed the negative impact of segregated education, and the life-enriching value of inter-group and interpersonal contact. The young people were wonderfully engaged with the topic, and many stayed behind after the debate to talk with us individually. A thoroughly wonderful experience!

We enjoyed a very joyous festive meal together on Wednesday at Heath Church. Speakers from the faiths observing Ramadan, Passover and Easter spoke to us about the meaning of these special times in their faith. Then we opened fast with water, fruit and dates before enjoying the “bring and share” buffet. It truly was a feast!
