Salāt al-Kusūf – Solar Eclipse Prayer

Astronomically, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring part or all of the Sun from our view.

Islam does not deny this physical explanation. Rather, the Qur’an and Sunnah teach us to look beyond the physical mechanism and recognise these extraordinary events as signs of Allah’s power, greatness and perfect control over His creation.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The sun and the moon are two signs from among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or birth of anyone.”

He ﷺ also taught us that Allah causes His servants to fear Him through such signs, and instructed us to turn to prayer, remembrance of Allah, du‘ā and seeking His forgiveness when we witness them.

On the day that Ibrāhīm, the son of the Prophet ﷺ, died, a solar eclipse occurred and some people thought the two events were connected. The Prophet ﷺ immediately corrected this belief and taught the Ummah that the sun and moon follow Allah’s command and do not eclipse because of the death or birth of any human being.
