Clandon Wood

Clandon Wood Beautiful, award winning nature reserve & natural burial ground - a cemetery for our time. In fact on arriving you would not guess it is a cemetery.

A funeral you will want to remember in a place you won't want to forget. A perfect place to be – guided by nature

Clandon Wood is a nature reserve as well as a final resting place for our loved ones. With thirty-one acres of traditional wildflower meadowland, lakes, wetland and young woodland inhabited by a wide and diverse range of flora and fauna our national award winning naturally managed bur

ial ground provides the perfect final resting place for you or a loved one whatever faith, belief or thinking. Core to the thinking behind Clandon Wood is the creation of a place of nature, beauty and openness where those left behind will want to come and spend time to reflect and remember for generations to come. Our professionally qualified personnel with expertise in conservation and arboriculture manage the grounds to complement the farmland and woodlands around us to the benefit of local wildlife. Although most of the site is meadowland our newly planted trees blend the woodlands and grasslands of the neighbourhood together making us a large glade within a wood. Our 21 acre glade is managed as a wildflower meadow rich in nectar, seed sources and “hidey holes” for wildlife as diverse as the smallest mining bees to badgers in a rich patchwork of habitats. We have created two wildlife ponds full of dragonflies that now hunt the insects feeding on the flowers and grasses which are in turn fed upon by hobbies and other birds. In a landscape increasingly barren to wildlife our dedicated ground-staff works to support biodiversity from the ground up. In fact the only way to really appreciate what we have to offer at Clandon Wood is to experience it first-hand. So come and see Clandon Wood for yourself – whether to visit our nature reserve or if you are thinking about choosing a plot, you will always be welcome.

Clandon Wood in June

I like to think of Clandon Wood as a theatre.

The trees that had the starring role in spring are now simply the backdrop for the summer meadow. It's awash with colour from a wonderful supporting cast, but in June the headline acts arrive.

Keep an eye out for bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and common spotted orchid, along with other botanical stars such as common broomrape and grass vetchling.

Above the meadow, swifts, house martins and swallows put on their aerial display, before handing over to their evening understudy, the common pipistrelle bat.

There are guest appearances from a host of butterflies and moths, while from the orchestra pit come the songs of grasshoppers and crickets – heard far more often than they are seen.

One of the great pleasures of working here is watching the cast change with the seasons.

— Phil, Senior Groundsman

The meadows at Clandon Wood are looking especially green and vibrant at the moment, with wildflowers continuing to emerge across the grounds.

Our grounds team have been busy mowing and maintaining pathways throughout the meadow areas to ensure easy access to graves and memorial spaces for all visitors spending time with loved ones.

Spring flowers at Clandon Wood

The combination of warm days, plenty of sun and the rain we have experienced this spring has led to a profusion of flowering plants and blossoming trees at Clandon Wood, the beauty of which we have managed to capture in this short film.

One of the first Greater Whitethroats has been heard at Clandon.

That scratchy, hurried song drifting out from the hedgerows is easy to miss if you’re not listening for it, but once you know it, it’s unmistakable. These small, understated birds travel thousands of miles to be here, arriving each spring to breed before quietly slipping away again at the end of summer.

Open to anyone who has been bereaved, the Clandon Wood Drop In Days offer a chance to be among others who share the experience of loss.

Talking helps. Having a space where death is not a taboo is important. And knowing that others who have experienced something similar are there to support you is a relief.

George, Ailean and Marion host these special Sundays, along with our very helpful volunteers Gary and Michael and although we won’t be offering professional bereavement support we think that kindness and company is sometimes all that is needed.

We look forward to seeing you.

A familiar splash of blue at this time of year — Green alkanet popping up along paths and woodland edges.

Often mistaken for borage, it’s a tough, fast-spreading plant with vivid blue flowers that pollinators love. Not everyone’s favourite in a garden, but in the right place it brings early colour and valuable nectar.

The first of hundreds.

Oxeye daisies are just starting to open, and this is the moment the meadow begins its shift . Each one starts like this. Small, simple, easy to miss. Then, almost overnight, they take over.
