Fancy a morning of beautiful live music, great coffee and a warm welcome?

Join us at Guildford Cathedral on Thursday 10 September for our next Free Coffee Concert — and this one is a treat!

We’re delighted to welcome The Holywell Ensemble, bringing a wonderful programme of trios and duos performed by Kate Bailey on violin, Spike Wilson on cello and Margaret Ozanne on piano.

They’ve performed everywhere from Oxford’s historic Holywell Music Room to venues across the UK and beyond — and now they’re coming to Guildford Cathedral for a relaxed morning of music for all to enjoy.

Bring a friend, pop in on your own, or make it a morning out — everyone is welcome.

Transformative Power of Art | Panel Evening

As part of Transformations, our art exhibition running at Guildford Cathedral from 8 September to 19 October, join us for a special panel evening during Prisons Week.

Transformations features anonymous artwork created by men at HMP Coldingley, exploring hope, reflection, dignity and personal change.

Monday 12 October | 6pm to 8pm

Moderated by The Very Reverend Bob Cooper, Dean of Guildford, the panel includes:

• Dez Brown, Trustee, Prison Fellowship England & Wales
• Rev Alex Day, Chaplain, HMP Coldingley
• Theresa Chambers-Blaney, former Deputy Education Manager and Art Tutor, HMP Coldingley

Together they will explore the role of creativity in rehabilitation, identity, hope and second chances.

Today, Saturday 5 September is International Day of Charity 💛

As a charity ourselves, we are incredibly grateful for everyone who supports Guildford Cathedral through giving, volunteering and being part of our community.

Charity is also about looking outwards. Through our outward giving, we are proud to support our mission partners Guildford Town Centre Chaplaincy, Seeds for Development and Home-Start Guildford, and the important work they do in their communities.

We are also delighted to be partnering with Binti and the Prostate Project on our toilet refurbishment project, helping us to create better, more welcoming and accessible facilities for everyone who visits the Cathedral.

If you would like to be part of Cathedral life, there are many ways to get involved. You can join us for worship and become part of our congregation, volunteer your time, share our news and events on social media, or support our toilet refurbishment project with a donation. Every contribution, in whatever form it takes, makes a difference.

Our Services

This Sunday, we are delighted to welcome back our boy and girl choristers and lay clerks following their summer break.

We also extend a very warm welcome to Emily Amos, who joins us as our Organ Scholar for the new academic year. This term, our Cathedral Choir will be under the direction of Asher Oliver, Acting Organist and Master of the Choristers.

with the Installation of the Head and Deputy Head Choristers

The boy choristers return for the Cathedral Eucharist, singing Giovanni Croce’s Missa sexti toni and Edward Elgar’s O salutaris hostia.

During the service, our new Head and Deputy Head Boy Choristers will be presented with their medals and installed into their new roles. Congratulations to Jeremiah, Henry and William. The equivalent ceremony for our Head and Deputy Head Girl Choristers will take place next week.

🔥 The Farnham Flame rises again

A striking piece of Surrey’s public art has been given a new lease of life, and it has an interesting connection with Guildford Cathedral.

The Farnham Flame, created by sculptor Alan Collins in 1966, has been restored and is once again on public display, this time at Brightwells in Farnham.

Originally created for the Woolmead development, the sculpture was designed to reflect Farnham’s history. Its flame-like form recalls the town’s pottery kilns and hop-drying kilns, while also reflecting Farnham’s long ecclesiastical heritage. When the Woolmead buildings were demolished, the sculpture was saved and put into storage. It has now been restored and given a new home where it can once again be seen and enjoyed.

So, who was Alan Collins?

Alan Collins (1928–2016) was a British sculptor known for his religious and public art. His work can be found in churches, cathedrals and public spaces in Britain and the United States.

He has a particularly strong connection with Guildford Cathedral. During the 1960s, Collins created a number of sculptures for the Cathedral, including The Hand of God on the West Front and the figures of St Martha and St Catherine, which can be seen on the exterior buttresses of the Lady Chapel.

His other notable work includes the John F. Kennedy Memorial at Runnymede, as well as sculptures at Southwark Cathedral and St Albans Cathedral

Collins later moved to the United States, where he continued his career as both a sculptor and teacher. He described his religious sculptures as “silent sermons”, a wonderful phrase that captures his belief that sculpture could communicate faith and tell a story without words.

It is lovely to see the Farnham Flame restored and back on public display, and to be reminded of the work of an artist whose legacy can also be seen here at Guildford Cathedral.

🚒 A special morning at Guildford Cathedral

It was a pleasure to welcome Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to the Cathedral today for a planned training exercise.

There was also a lovely surprise in store for our Cathedral Tots, who were here for their session this morning and made the most of the opportunity to meet some of the crew and have a few photographs with the fire engines! 🚒

We were delighted to be able to support the exercise and to play our part in Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s work to make Surrey a safer place to live, work, travel and do business.

A big thank you to everyone involved, and to our Cathedral Tots for making the most of an unexpected and exciting addition to their morning!

📊 Do you secretly enjoy sorting out a messy spreadsheet?

Do you like data? Enjoy making sense of information, spotting what doesn’t look quite right and getting everything organised?

We are looking for Data & Administration Volunteers to help us get our records and information into great shape.

There’s lots to do, so we’re looking for Volunteers who are ready to get stuck in!

You could be helping with:

💻 Working with spreadsheets
🔄 Transferring information into our CRM
📊 Organising and tidying data
🔎 Checking for missing, duplicate or outdated information
📋 Keeping our databases accurate and up to date

You don’t need to be a data expert or have experience with our CRM. Full training will be provided. We are looking for Volunteers who are comfortable with spreadsheets, have a good eye for detail and enjoy making sense of information.

🗓 Time commitment: Around 2 days a week initially, as there’s lots to get started with!

We can be flexible about how this time is arranged. It could be two days, a few mornings, or shorter sessions spread across the week.

If you’re interested but can’t commit to two days a week, please still get in touch. We’d love to hear from you and have a chat about what might work.

📢 Training exercise at Guildford Cathedral

🚒 Tomorrow, we are pleased to welcome Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to Guildford Cathedral for a planned training exercise.

The exercise will take place between 9:30am and 12:30pm and forms part of their important work to help keep .

If you are visiting the Cathedral or are in the surrounding area, please do not be alarmed if you see fire crews and emergency vehicles during this time.

We are pleased to support Surrey Fire and Rescue Service by providing a setting for this essential training.
