I’m very proud of this.
When I became Director of Music in September 2022, there was one chorister in The Choirs of Grimsby Minster. After a great deal of hard work with help from the evangelical support from Mark Keith and Choral Humber there are now 16 choristers (and rising); all drawn from local state schools. Yesterday, 13 of them travelled to Lincoln Cathedral to sing Festal Evensong with the cathedral’s Girl Choristers. A truly transformative experience for these children, they sang their hearts out with precision and determination. I enjoyed my little bit of conducting in the cathedral, of course, but what gave me the utmost pleasure was observing my choristers watching Jeffrey Makinson and giving every ounce of their ability and focus.
I am inspired by these children at every rehearsal and service. Their passion for singing and love of the repertoire our treasured choral tradition is energising and reaffirming.
Watch this space for occasional posts on how we went about it…

On Sunday evening we welcome the Choristers of Grimsby Minster, who will be joining our own choristers to sing for Choral Evensong at 5.00pm.

The service will start with a joyful Eastertide introit, Risen Lord, by Barry Rose, sometime organist at Guildford, St Paul's and St Albans Cathedrals. The setting of the canticles is by Sir George Dyson (in C minor). Dyson was director of the Royal College of Music for several years. His larger scale works have recently enjoyed something of a resurgence in popularity. The same composer set the music for the anthem, Praise, which sets George Herbert's poem, Let all the world in every corner sing. This carefully crafted piece lends a suitable sense of grandeur to the occasion.

The photograph is from when our choristers visited Grimsby last year.
