1/3 Pupils and members of staff from Gretna Primary School recently visited All Saints. The children came in three groups to learn about the history of the church and it's role in the community. Coming in three separate groups, they were shown around the church as well hearing about what All Saints does and why it is there.

2/3 The pupils were shown all the different pieces of history inside the building with explanations of what everything is used for at Services and why. They were fascinated to see the earliest records of the congregation dating back to when the church was built in 1917 when Gretna dramatically developed with the building of the massive munitions factory during WW1.

3/3 Their visit was part of their researches on a project by the whole of Primary School on the history of Gretna and ended with a quiz where the pupils were allowed time and space to roam inside the church themselves to find the answers. A multi-media presentation of all their hard work will form an exhibition in All Saints Church early in December. This will be open throughout the week to the public and more information will be coming soon.

'Compare and Contrast' (with post on 10th August)

As promised a photo of the re-furbished stained-glass window. The high altar has had the scaffolding re-moved and the hangings and angels on the riddle posts re-fitted. Everything has been cleaned and polished and the cross and candlesticks are back in place. A big thanks to Mike, Owen and Freda for all their work and to our architect Rebecca of ARPL for organising the refurbishment of the window.

We are 'raising the roof' at Gretna

Absolutely delighted that the south slope of the church roof is now complete. The new slates look magnificent and thanks must go to the team at Vennings. The cable coming down the roof on the right of the picture is part of our new lightening conductor system.

The work continues

During the replacement of the roof, work on refurbishing the stained glass window above the high altar has also been undertaken. This involved internal scaffolding around the altar to facilitate its removal. The window has now been removed and completely refitted. Picture of the new window will be coming soon once the scaffolding is down.

The Birds Have Flown

The eggs in the jackdaw nest that were discovered when the scaffolding was erected have now hatched and the chicks have fledged. This means that work can now begin on that part of the west end of the roof. The west church bell has been removed for refurbishment and the mechanism is to be strengthened.

During work on the removing the slates a jackdaw nest has been discovered. Many jackdaws have been seen recently around the church. The area surrounding the nest has been ringfenced and we have have been assured that no work will take place there until the eggs have hatched and the chics fledged. Work continues with great speed in other areas of the roof

Conserving All Saints Church Gretna, at the heart of our community

Work has now begun on the south side roof of the church. This has been made possible through generous funding by Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland as well as other bodies and individual donations. The Rector and vestry are very grateful for all the help given in preserving this historic building.
