Election hustings this Thursday bring out the candidates

The local SNP, Conservative and Labour candidates for this year’s Scottish Parliamentary elections will all be present and take part in the election hustings being held this Thursday in the Lyle Kirk in Union Street, Greenock at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. The Liberal and Reform candidates are at other events that evening and they are sending representatives in their place. The event has been organised by Inverclyde Christian Initiative and Lyle Kirk whose Minister Jonathan Fleming will moderate the occasion. Questions will include a number concentrating on the local area and some wider moral issues. All are welcome.

‘Meet the Candidates’ special election meeting on Thursday 23rd April

Inverclyde Christian Initiative has got together with The Lyle Kirk Church of Scotland to hold a Scottish Parliament election special in the Lyle Kirk in Union Street, Greenock on Thursday 23rd April at 6.30pm for 7pm. Tea and coffee will be available on arrival. The elections themselves take place on Thursday 7th May.

For the Initiative, Chris Jewell, ‘while there will be much talk over the coming weeks on some of the main issues facing the country, this meeting will provide the candidates to respond to some of the moral and other issues facing us all. We look forward to hearing from the candidates about these.

Jonathan Fleming, Minister of the Lyle Kirk, who will moderate the event, said. We are glad to be able to offer this chance for those attending to grill the candidates on important issues. The candidates will receive in advance a list of issues and questions to give them time to be ready to respond and outline their positions.’

All are welcome to this occasion.

God’s people are coming together for special Easter celebration

At this special time in the Christian calendar and adopted by so many nations, Inverclyde Christian Initiative has planned a special Easter Day celebration event in the Greenock Town Hall at 7pm on Sunday 5th April and the whole world locally and beyond are warmly invited to come along and be a part of it.

For the Initiative, Chris Jewell said, ‘One of the greatest events to hit mankind happened at Easter when Jesus, God’s only Son, rose from the dead after an awful death by crucifixion three days earlier. Despite a trusted Roman guard at the tomb where He was laid, He wasn’t in the tomb on the third day and subsequently appeared to His disciples and others in the days that followed, having risen from the dead.

‘The Bible tells us that there had been a violent earthquake, and an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the entrance stone.’

The evening will include an amazing life changing story as well as uplifting songs of hope, led by a local Christian band. The event is free to attend and will last approximately an hour or so.

Chris added, ‘At a time where there appears to be increasing interest in Christianity particularly among young adults, this event is an opportunity for people from all the denominations or none and the churches here in Inverclyde to come together to celebrate Easter together in the presence of God. We hope that as many as can manage will be with us on this special occasion. Whoever you are, you will be made most welcome’.

Praise Gathering choir looking for more members

There are still 30 places or so available to sing in this year's Praise Gathering concerts in Glasgow in June in the Royal Concert Hall with an audience of some 2,000. This is a very significant Christian choir with members coming from some 200 churches, including a number from Greenock. People who sing in Praise Gathering have really enjoyed being a part of this choir and feel they experience God in rehearsing and taking part in these concerts. No audition is necessary and there are 10 weekly rehearsals in Glasgow. Further information is available locally from Chris Jewell, a member of the choir, on 07932 154515. Excerpts from their 2025 concerts are available on YouTube by searching Praise Gathering 2025.

A good crowd were at Hope Community church in Kelly Street, Greenock to help celebrate 20 years of Inverclyde Christian Initiative and 15 years of Inverclyde Street Pastors. They were able to hear from several contributors how both came into being, much of what had been accomplished with plans for the future shared.

Alistair McAlees, Chair of the Initiative and the Inverclyde Street Pastor Co-ordinator said, ‘this was a great occasion to thank God for all that has happened and to look to Him to guide us in the days to come. Street Pastors these days as well as being out at night, also undertake day patrols in Greenock’s town centre, have a weekly stand in the Oak Mall, patrol on local trains and around one of our secondary schools. One highlight of the evening was the commissioning of two new Street Pastors for Inverclyde and we would welcome more to increase the impact Street Pastors can make locally.’

Anyone with an interest in becoming a Street Pastor should contact Alistair on 07740 201 853.
