St. Peter's Church - Great Totham

St. Peter's Church - Great Totham Our Parish church is a beautiful Grade II* listed building that dates back to the 13th century. Our Parish Safeguarding Representative is Christine Walker.

The parish of Gt Totham is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO). The Diocese of Chelmsford’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child

or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services. It lies in the heart of rural Essex overlooking the River Blackwater estuary. It provides a special place for community worship and a tranquil haven of peace in our busy world. But more, it seeks to serve the whole village with a variety of activities for all ages. Apart from special event services e.g Christmas, weddings, it provides a Senior Lunch Club, Teas, Fayres, festivals & Fetes, a mini-bus and a free Parish Magazine distributed to every home to support local businesses, Clubs and Societies, and people’s achievements.

Today’s SClub was based on Matthew’s gospel and was titled Beyond Hope. The children first drew a picture from a simple squiggle - a dinosaur and a dog - showing that God can make something simple become more. Then they tore up pieces of wrapping paper and pieces them back together with gold lines in between- like the Japanese art of Kintsugi; making something renewed and restored. They learnt that Jesus didn’t only do what the people in the story expected: he did more and changed their lives completely 🥰

It was lovely to host a Benefice service today and see our friends from other parishes. As it’s Trinity Sunday, the children made trinity bracelets or bookmarks by plaiting 3 coloured ribbons. They also cut out templates of Jesus and wrote the message ‘Jesus is always with you’ on the back. They popped them in an envelope to share with the congregation. The idea of the ‘Flat Jesus’ message was based on the book ‘Flat Stanley’ by Jeff Brown. They make a great bookmark!

Well done to Ella for her prize having been to SClub ten times! 🤩

We also took the opportunity to thank Penny Adams for all her support and wish her well for the future as she will be leaving us in the summer to begin her Curacy placement. Please keep Penny and her family in your prayers as she prepares for this exciting new chapter!

The theme for SClub yesterday was God's gifts.

We all contribute in different ways to the church.

We made a collage made up of things found around the church.

Today our session was based on Peter’s letter to the Early Church communities-they were facing some challenging times and he reassured them that Christ is with them and he cares for them. We explained to the children that if they ever have worries, they can give them to God. We did an activity with boxes-carrying a load of smaller ones is tricky - putting them all in a big box (like worries) makes life easier. Then they drew around their hands and in a circle of Peter’s words: So be humble under God’s powerful hand…Give all your worries to him, because he cares for you.
