—Appointment of Associate Priests Serving Our Benefice—
Congratulations to The Revd Ian Johnston, and The Revd Peter Streatfeild on their appointment by the Bishop of Carlisle as Associate Priests in the Benefice of the Barony of Burgh. Both currently hold Permission to Officiate (PTO) in the Diocese of Carlisle and will be licensed on 8 September 2026.
We're delighted to introduce the Associate Priests who will serve St. Giles and the other five parish churches in our benefice:
Peter Streatfeild
Peter returned to England in 2000 after spending 22 years working with the social action programmes of the Diocese of Nagpur in the Church of North India. He was ordained deacon in Carlisle in 2003 and priested in 2004. Following his curacy in the Solway Plain Team Ministry, where he helped oversee three parishes during an interregnum, Peter served for ten years as Team Vicar in the Binsey Team Ministry. During a subsequent interregnum, he again took on responsibility for the team's parishes. After retiring from stipendiary ministry, Peter moved to Bowness-on-Solway in 2018. He currently leads services on two Sundays each month, conducts baptisms and weddings, assists with Home Communion, and undertakes other ministry as required.
Ian Johnston
Ian was churchwarden of Burgh-by-Sands before being ordained as a Self-Supporting Minister (SSM). A former headteacher of several schools in Cumbria, he served as SSM Curate and then Associate Priest at St Barnabas with Holy Trinity, Carlisle, from 2018 to 2021. He subsequently served as SSM Priest-in-Charge of Rockcliffe and Blackford until 2025, while also acting as Chaplain to Austin Friars School. Ian currently offers ministry one Sunday each month, together with occasional offices and work with local schools.
