Proverbs 26:11—Dogs and Vomit. Yuck.

A couple of years ago, my family got a puppy. We named her Mojo.

She’s sweet as pie, cute as a button, and — well — gross at times. In fact, a little episode in my office one morning reminded me of today’s verse:

Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.
Proverbs 26:11 ESV

My son and Mojo having some bonding time.

Like the Proverb says, she lost her lunch and immediately wanted to scarf it back up. I held her back. But she was furiously trying to get at it.

What We Do With Our Sin
This moment is a vivid picture of our lives with sin. Sin is the root cause of every evil. It’s the source of our suffering. It’s the opposite of God’s nature. Yet somehow, we still clamour back to habitual sins and vices.

As rotten, nasty, and yucky as sin is, its true nature hides behind a facade of sickly sweetness. In fact, dog’s return to their vomit because their noses tell them it’s a tasty food source.

For us, we pursue sin because it’s appealing—when the reality is anything but.

How Peter Applied Proverbs 26:11
In 2 Peter 2:22, Peter quotes Proverbs 26:11 and takes its meaning even further. He wrote to combat false prophets and teachers who were leading people astray. He explained in 2 Peter 2 that they were:

Denying Jesus with “destructive heresies”
Following sensuality
Greedy and exploiting the church
Promise freedom but are slaves
Bringing destruction upon themselves and those who follow them
The craziest part is these false teachers knew the truth, and even followed Jesus faithfully at one time (2 Peter 2:20–21).

For us, Proverbs 26:11 has two big applications:

We should see our sin like we see a dog’s vomit—gross!
We should be wary of false teaching that leads us away from the truth to embrace lies.
Where do you need to change your view of sin and wandering from the truth, today?

How Family Devo Time Helps Your Kids

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6 ESV

Family devotions are such an important part of a godly household. So many of us know it—but it can be pretty tough to do it.

Growing up, my Mom and Dad did family devotions with my little brother and I each morning. Without fail, we’d be around the breakfast table, taking turns reading through the Psalms or another book of the Bible.

Now, as a teenager, I probably looked like a zombie most mornings. Sitting like a sleepy lump, barely showing signs of life! But you know what? Those mornings have had an impact on me.

I learned the power of consistency.

Now that I have a kiddo of my own, I realise how much work it is to be consistent. But in our relationship with the Lord, it’s so important to be consistent in our time with him.

We’re encouraged to meditate on his Law day and night. And just like a tree that grows steadily over time, we flourish into an oak whose branches never wither (Psalm 1). Today’s Proverb teaches us to train our kids in the way they should go.

There is a major difference between “should” and “want to.” The verse isn’t that children should be trained in the way they want to go—but in the way they should.

Family Devotions
Training is hard work. It requires repetition, discipline, and commitment. But do you know where this starts? Not with our kids—but with us parents!

In my life, I can pinpoint much fruit from consistent family devotions. Many mornings, I certainly didn’t want to spend time in the Bible and prayer as a family. But my parents made it non-negotiable. I saw their commitment to the Word and to my brother and I. This is part of how they’ve passed down their legacy of faith to us.

The Fruit of Family Devotions
Consistency is so much work, but it yields much fruit. And we’ll do well to remember that saplings become trees because they’re fed by sun, rain, and soil.

Do you have consistent family devotions with your kids? If not, start today! Maybe you can start a Bible reading plan? Or even something as simple as reading a short Psalm and then praying for one of their friends or a neighbour.

No matter how big or small, the point is that you start. And parents, this one is on you. 🙂 How are you nurturing a consistent devotional life in your children?

Sorry! We're a little late with today's devotional!

To Die Is Gain

“For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21

We’ve looked at what Paul meant by “to live is Christ,” now what did he mean by “to die is gain“?

For many of us, the truth is pretty shocking. Paul flat out says he wants to “depart and be with Christ, for that is far better” (Philippians 1:23). That’s right, Paul says he wishes he could die and be with Jesus than stay on earth . . .

Paul shows us something profound: the glory of being with Jesus will be unrivalled, unmatched, and undeniably wonderful.

For the disciple, there is a magnetic pull toward Jesus. Just like gravity makes water run downhill, our desires and affections always flow to Jesus.

This doesn’t simply mean we’re focused on an eternity in heaven above everything else, though. Instead, it means we’re obsessed with being on Jesus’ mission.

To Die Is Gain

What Does “To Die Is Gain” Actually Mean?
That is why Paul ultimately decides that “to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account” (Philippians 1:25–26).

You see, the way of Jesus is the way of service.

Like he said in Mark 10:45, “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many.”

While dying is and being with Jesus is gain, it is an even greater gain to embody Jesus and become more like him right now.

Paul gave everything to help Christians like the Philippians in their “progress and joy in the faith.” He lived in a way that made his life “ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus.”

This ignites a blazing fire in my spirit to live like this! What would it look like to have hearts so on fire for Jesus that our soul aim in life (and death) was to follow his way?

In life and death, the way of Jesus is the way of service.

Today, we have the opportunity to embrace the way of Jesus, just like Paul.

Let’s join him in saying”to die is gain” and live it out!

Build Emotional Health in Your Home

A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
but a wise man quietly holds it back.
Proverbs 29:11 ESV

We’ve all flown off the rails emotionally.

Whether it’s been anxiety, anger, sadness, or any shade of emotion in between… We’ve all lost it.

A couple of years ago, though, I realised that as a dad, I’m the emotional thermostat for my household.

Everyone feeds off of my emotional state—especially my daughter (and now twins).

So, regardless of how I’m feeling, I need to deeply consider what emotional state I’m creating.

I will not pretend, as my kids need to see the emotional breadth of being human. But I will stop whining, being crabby, and creating an environment of stress when it’s unnecessary.

Are you creating an emotionally healthy atmosphere in your home? Or are you giving full vent to your spirit?

Well, one day I totally blew it…

I realised I was creating an environment where it was more peaceful when I wasn’t there, than when I was home.

After I snapped at my oldest daughter, I had to go apologise to her and to my wife.

If you struggle with anger, stress, or anxiety, today’s verse is tremendously helpful.

Don’t be discouraged, there is a path forward—and it is becoming a man or woman of peace, increasing the fruit of self-control in your life.

How can you bring peace into your household, rather than anxiety?
