Sadly, after several enjoyable and rewarding years, the Roseberry Church Music Singers are no longer singing together as a formal choir following the enforced hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was nevertheless lovely to see (and hear) so many former RCMS singers joining with the choir and congregation at Christ Church, Great Ayton last Sunday evening for a special Choral Evensong to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams. We hope that there may be opportunities for former RCMS members to meet and sing together on similar future occasions.

Many thanks to all who attended and participated in Sunday's service at Christ Church for your contribution to such a memorable occasion.

Well done to Christ Church Choir and Friends led by Andrew and Richard, who gave us a super Choral Evensong tonight, and to Jane for singing the Office. A wonderful occasion to lift the spirits and the soul. Thank you all.

Giorgio Chiellini and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina - separated at birth? Come to think of it, Jack Grealish has a touch of the Thomas Tallis about him too.

Lovely to hear King's College, Cambridge singing Choral Evensong again. There's much to enjoy if you didn't catch it first time around, including the terrific Te Deum in F by John Ireland. Here's hoping that non-professional choirs and congregations can return to singing in the not too distant future.

Live from the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge.

It's a badly kept secret that many singers' love of choral music is surpassed only by their enjoyment of a post-Evensong tipple. On the day when our hostelries reopen, here's an alternative text to the Howells carol "Here is the little (pub) door" (great work from "In quires and places where they meme" for the rhyming couplet of drunk/Nunc!).

Unfortunately, most vestry doors remain closed so singers may have to find an alternative to Choral Evensong for working up a thirst.

Cheers!

There's plenty to enjoy in today's BBC Radio 3 Choral Evensong for the Eve of the Ascension for anybody who loves twentieth century and contemporary English music. Music includes pieces by Philip Moore, Leighton, Finzi, Grayston Ives, Harwood and Howells.

Please listen responsibly - it may just make you miss live Choral Evensong!

Live from St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, on the Eve of the Ascension.
