The chief priests and the elders of the people took Jesus to stand before Pilate, the governor, who after hearing their accusations, asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

“Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply to Pilate's questions or to a single charge.

Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But the crowd shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

Jesus was flogged, and handed over to the soldiers. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him before twisting together a crown of thorns and set it on his head.

They knelt in front of Jesus and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and struck him on the head again and again.

Then the soldiers led him away to be crucified.

Today we give thanks for the women who nurture, guide, love and pray for us.
Mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, spiritual mothers, and those who care with a mother’s heart.

We also remember that this day can hold many emotions —
gratitude, grief, longing, and love.

May we celebrate the gift of care and compassion that reflects the heart of God.
Our service today is at St Mary’s at 10.30am
