THE CALL FOR DOUBLE LISTENING: DOES THE MARKET FORCES RULE IN THE CHURCH NOW?

The main reason for every betrayal of the authentic Jesus is that we listen with exaggerated deference to contemporary fashion, instead of listening to the Word of God. The demand for relevance becomes so imperious that we feel we have to capitulate to it, at whatever cost.

We are very familiar with this kind of pressure in the business world, in which it is the marketing people who determines the firm’s product by discovering what will sell, what the public want to buy. It sometimes seems as if market forces rule in the church as well.

We become obsequious to the modern mood, slaves to the latest fad, and even idolaters who are prepared to sacrifice TRUTH on the altar of modernity. Then the quest for relevance, fame, celebrity status has degenerated into a lust for popularity.

For the opposite extreme to irrelevance is accommodation, which is feeble-minded, unprincipled surrender to the Zeitgeist, the spirit of the time. Thielicke was haunted by this danger, because he could not forget how the so-called ‘German Christians’ during Hitler’s Third Reich accepted and even defended the racial myths of the N***s. He insisted, therefore, that TRUE THEOLOGY ‘always involve a debate between the KERYGMA (the preaching or proclamation of the Christian gospel validated by the historical knowledge of events in the past) and the self-understanding of our age,……between eternity and time’. Moreover, in this debate, ‘faith believes against as well as in; it is born in a conscious reaction to current ideas.

Thus Thielicke, in his book, “Modern Faith and Thought”, writes of theology’s ‘polar structure’, one pole being ‘a superior, eternal basis derived from revelation’ and the other being ‘specific constellations of the spirit of the age’. ‘Faith’, he insists, ‘will always be a venture;…..it will involve not a ‘Because’ but a ‘Nevertheless’, in the face of the reality of the human.

Basically, it is time to say “ENOUGH” to the dance around the golden calves of modernity. More important than the question, “What does modern man have to say to the church?” is the question, “What does the church have to say to modern man?

The people of God live in a world which is often unfriendly and sometimes actively hostile. We are constantly exposed to the pressure to conform. Yet throughout Scripture, the summons is given to a VIGOROUS NON-CONFORMITY, AND WARNINGS ARE SOUNDED TO THOSE WHO GIVE IN TO WORLDLINESS.

Therefore, it is very possible for us believers in Christ, to be both conservative and radical simultaneously. Conservative in guarding God’s revelation and radical in our thoroughgoing application of it.

We can develop Christian mind which is both shaped by the truths of HISTORICAL, BIBLICAL CHRISTIANITY, AND ACQUAINTED WITH THE REALITIES OF THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD. We can relate the Word, and even the understanding the Word in the light of the world. All of these are possible by what we call a DOUBLE REFUSAL.

Double refusal means that we refuse to become either so absorbed in the Word, that we escape into it and fail to let it confront the world, or so absorbed in the world, that we conform to it and fail to subject it to the judgement of the Word of God. ESCAPISM AND CONFORMITY ARE OPPOSITE MISTAKES, but neither is a Christian option.

In place of this double refusal we are called to double listening; listening both to the Word of God and to the world. We listen to the Word with humble reverence, anxious to understand. We listen to the world with critical alertness, anxious to understand it too, and resolved not necessarily to believe and obey it, but to sympathize with it and to seek grace to discover how the gospel relates to it.

It is through the discipline of double listening that it is possible to become a contemporary Christian. Double listening is so indispensable to Christian Discipleship and Christian Mission.

Dearly Beloved Intercessors,

Welcome to the month of October 2023.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our troubles that we may be able to comfort others who are in any trouble, by the same comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted by God.

On behalf of everyone at Global Prayer Forum, we say thank you for your resilience and continuous participation in this glorious ministry of intercession. Thank you for the joy, strength and encouragement that you bring to the forum, as well as your deep and unflinching commitment and support for the vision of standing in the gap for others, that God’s kingdom and His agenda for humanity on earth may be established. Thank you ever so much.

By the grace and mercy of our God, our theme for the month of OCTOBER 2023 IS: PRAYING FOR PASTORS, CHURCH LEADERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

But why should we pray for the pastors and church leaders, you may ask? What lasting impacts on God’s servants will be felt when we lift up our voices to pray for those God has appointed to shepherd His people?

Prayer is how we bring God’s kingdom resources into our circumstances. Our shepherds need our prayers. They have been given a great responsibility as an overseer of the church of Christ. They need grace and strength that only God can give. They need supernatural ability to walk in this calling.

Few things warm the heart of any pastor more than their church members telling them they are praying for them daily. Their simple act of prayer both encourages and reassures them. It encourages them to know they are standing in the gap for them spiritually, and it reassure them to know they loved their family, the church, and the pastor enough to do so.

Pastors are men called by God to serve his flock, and they regularly bless our families and us. The least we can do is pray for them faithfully. There are many Biblical reasons why we should pray for our pastors, but let us consider just these four.

First, pastors face a higher judgment. The ministry of the Word is a rewarding but dangerous calling.

Second, pastors face more intense temptation. Peter tells us that Satan roams about as a roaring lion seeking those he may devour; and there is no one he enjoys devouring more than a Christian minister, especially an erstwhile faithful one. When he does, he not only ruins a pastor and his ministry, he also destroy a family, disrupts a church, and sullies God’s glory in that community. There simply is no sin like the sin of a clergyman, and there is no one Satan desires to bring down more than those whom God is using most fruitfully.

Third, pastors face unique pressures. There are days pastors carry the weight of the world, and for reasons of confidentiality, all they can do is bottle it up. Whether it is a piercing word of criticism, a church member’s scandalous sin, a draining counseling session, a rigorous day of sermon preparation, or just the operational challenges of most congregations, all of these burdens—and more—can mount up to make the strains of ministry seem at times nearly unbearable.

Fourth, pastors will bless you more. This final point may seem odd, if not altogether self-serving, but it is true. The more we pray for our pastors, and especially their preaching ministry, the more we get fed from the pulpit. Perhaps it is God answering our prayers for our pastors, or perhaps our hearts are better prepared to receive the Word after praying for the preacher, but time and again, we will see a direct correlation between the two. The surest way to be personally blessed is to pray more fervently for the preacher and the preaching of God’s Word.

Any man can take the title pastor, and too many men have. Only those called of God can rightly shepherd his flock. If God has given you such a man, you have been blessed indeed. Make sure and bless him or her—and yourself—by praying for him daily.

Pastor appreciation Sunday comes around one week a year. But the church can show their appreciation to their pastors and pastors generally DAILY by praying for them.

One favorite example of this is in Paul's letter to the Philippians. He was writing them from prison. He asked them to be praying for him and he was confident that their prayers would turn out for his deliverance.

“…for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ” – Philippians 1:19 NASB

Paul understood that the prayers of the people were powerful for bringing about his rescue.

Likewise, our pastors need this kind of power manifested in their own lives. Especially in today’s world which is becoming more and more hostile towards truth and godliness. Our pastors are under much pressure. They need our prayers to lead their flock according to love, truth, and righteousness.

Finally, we hope you are able to join us at some point during the month of October, 2023, as we embark on this glorious journey in raising a prayer cover and shield for all the true servants of God and missionaries worldwide.

Warmest Regards

Samuel Olusola Olumoyegun.

On Behalf of Global Prayer Forum.

PLENARY, VERBAL INSPIRATION OF THE SCRIPTURES.

We, as Protestant Evangelical Christians believe in the plenary, verbal inspiration of the accepted canon of the Scriptures as originally given and that they are infallible and uniquely authoritative and free from error of any sort in all matters with which they deal, including scientific and historical as well as moral and theological issues.

Plenary inspiration means that the entire Bible is totally inspired by God.

a. Inspiration does not merely apply to portions of the Bible, but it applies to the entire book.

b. Inspiration does not merely apply to doctrinal issues, but it applies to every area covered.

2. The word “verbal” means “relating to words.”

a. Verbal inspiration means that God not only gave the subject matter to be recorded, but the very words that are used are inspired of God (Jer. 1:9; I Th. 2:13; I Chr. 28:11-12,19).

"Then the LORD touched my mouth and said, “See, I have put my words in your mouth!” Jeremiah 1:9

b. Verbal inspiration does not mean that the writers were in a trance and that their personalities were totally overruled by the Spirit.

c. Verbal inspiration means that the Scripture is perfectly inerrant (without error) in all of its words and every one of its words (John 10:35b; Mt. 5:17-19; Acts 24:14).

Good evening.

I will like to extend an invitation to all intercessors out there to join us in this ministry of intercession. It's been on for over 3 years now and still counting, with brethren frogman parts of the UK and sometimes outside of the country, joining in. It's anon-denominational gathering, with prayers led by God's servants from various churches and ministries. Trust me, you will definitely be thoroughly inspired and transformed.

Love is not something we fall into; it’s a rough and rocky hill we commit ourselves to climb. Or, to change the metaphor, love is a story we decide to write together with another person. There will be paragraphs penned in the calligraphy of pure ecstasy, but there will also be chapters scribbled in pain.

The thing is, we don’t know what form or direction the narrative will take. The final chapter is not written until it’s lived.

What we’re devoting ourselves to is not a fairy tale, not a thriller, not a bestseller, but a simple story of sacrifice for someone else. We for them and (hopefully) they for us. But because it is the account of two sinners sharing the same bed, bank account, and bathroom counter, the narrative will become terribly messy and convoluted at times. There will be entire sections we wish we could blot out. Heated and vitriolic dialogues that embarrass us. And, along the way, plenty of happy surprises as well.

We’ll discover places in our hearts, and in the hearts of our beloved, that we didn’t even know existed.

That’s the way stories unfold. Unpredictable. Boring. Beautiful. Ugly. Riveting. We’ll find all of this and more when we commit to writing a story with another person to whom we say, “I love you.”
