Dearly Beloved Intercessors,
Welcome to the month of October 2023.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our troubles that we may be able to comfort others who are in any trouble, by the same comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted by God.
On behalf of everyone at Global Prayer Forum, we say thank you for your resilience and continuous participation in this glorious ministry of intercession. Thank you for the joy, strength and encouragement that you bring to the forum, as well as your deep and unflinching commitment and support for the vision of standing in the gap for others, that God’s kingdom and His agenda for humanity on earth may be established. Thank you ever so much.
By the grace and mercy of our God, our theme for the month of OCTOBER 2023 IS: PRAYING FOR PASTORS, CHURCH LEADERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
But why should we pray for the pastors and church leaders, you may ask? What lasting impacts on God’s servants will be felt when we lift up our voices to pray for those God has appointed to shepherd His people?
Prayer is how we bring God’s kingdom resources into our circumstances. Our shepherds need our prayers. They have been given a great responsibility as an overseer of the church of Christ. They need grace and strength that only God can give. They need supernatural ability to walk in this calling.
Few things warm the heart of any pastor more than their church members telling them they are praying for them daily. Their simple act of prayer both encourages and reassures them. It encourages them to know they are standing in the gap for them spiritually, and it reassure them to know they loved their family, the church, and the pastor enough to do so.
Pastors are men called by God to serve his flock, and they regularly bless our families and us. The least we can do is pray for them faithfully. There are many Biblical reasons why we should pray for our pastors, but let us consider just these four.
First, pastors face a higher judgment. The ministry of the Word is a rewarding but dangerous calling.
Second, pastors face more intense temptation. Peter tells us that Satan roams about as a roaring lion seeking those he may devour; and there is no one he enjoys devouring more than a Christian minister, especially an erstwhile faithful one. When he does, he not only ruins a pastor and his ministry, he also destroy a family, disrupts a church, and sullies God’s glory in that community. There simply is no sin like the sin of a clergyman, and there is no one Satan desires to bring down more than those whom God is using most fruitfully.
Third, pastors face unique pressures. There are days pastors carry the weight of the world, and for reasons of confidentiality, all they can do is bottle it up. Whether it is a piercing word of criticism, a church member’s scandalous sin, a draining counseling session, a rigorous day of sermon preparation, or just the operational challenges of most congregations, all of these burdens—and more—can mount up to make the strains of ministry seem at times nearly unbearable.
Fourth, pastors will bless you more. This final point may seem odd, if not altogether self-serving, but it is true. The more we pray for our pastors, and especially their preaching ministry, the more we get fed from the pulpit. Perhaps it is God answering our prayers for our pastors, or perhaps our hearts are better prepared to receive the Word after praying for the preacher, but time and again, we will see a direct correlation between the two. The surest way to be personally blessed is to pray more fervently for the preacher and the preaching of God’s Word.
Any man can take the title pastor, and too many men have. Only those called of God can rightly shepherd his flock. If God has given you such a man, you have been blessed indeed. Make sure and bless him or her—and yourself—by praying for him daily.
Pastor appreciation Sunday comes around one week a year. But the church can show their appreciation to their pastors and pastors generally DAILY by praying for them.
One favorite example of this is in Paul's letter to the Philippians. He was writing them from prison. He asked them to be praying for him and he was confident that their prayers would turn out for his deliverance.
“…for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ” – Philippians 1:19 NASB
Paul understood that the prayers of the people were powerful for bringing about his rescue.
Likewise, our pastors need this kind of power manifested in their own lives. Especially in today’s world which is becoming more and more hostile towards truth and godliness. Our pastors are under much pressure. They need our prayers to lead their flock according to love, truth, and righteousness.
Finally, we hope you are able to join us at some point during the month of October, 2023, as we embark on this glorious journey in raising a prayer cover and shield for all the true servants of God and missionaries worldwide.
Warmest Regards
Samuel Olusola Olumoyegun.
