It may seem odd that our churches continue to remain closed during this pernicious outbreak, at the very time that you might wish to enter a holy place for prayer and solace. As your new(ish) vicar I too find this very frustrating.
It may seem that it is possible to open, particularly large churches like St Goran where there is sufficient room that everyone could sit far enough apart for either private prayer or public worship. But the truth is more problematic.
This little innocuous looking life form is very clever and having been around for a very long time has numerous tricks up its sleeve. He can lie in wait on some surfaces, surviving for days.
As the main person responsible here for our three churches I cannot take the risk that someone with Covid 19, even if they don’t know they are a carrier, could enter and leave hidden virus messages for the unsuspecting to pick up. Yes, I know that we have hand sanitizer ready for every worshipper but can I actually guarantee everyone will disinfect their hands especially when the church is unoccupied.
So for the moment our three Anglican churches offer spiritual refreshment and worship material on our parish website (stgoranandstmichael.org.uk) and also hold worship via Zoom on Wednesday and Sunday mornings, both at 10.30am. If you wish to join either of these services please send me an email for the link. ([email protected]) For those days also send out a short reflection on our website helping you to think about the things of God. Obviously you are aware of our page!
None of this is what I expected when I arrived last November. Indeed, Melva and I had hardly settled into the vicarage at the end of January when we found ourselves in lockdown. So for us our ministry has taken on a whole new meaning! All this waiting does require patience. Yet we are finding new ways of sharing the Good News of Jesus that we are loved and forgiven, and not alone.
And we are finding new ways of getting to know our immediate neighbours through our Thursday evening “clap for our NHS” and also waiting - suitably distancing of course - in the queue for our Village Store!
Keep safe and well and may God be with you.
