After the fire of Pentecost we come to Trinity Sunday and one of the big set pieces in the Old Testament. It is 701BC and Samaria has fallen to the Assyrian and they are sweeping south. In fear King Hezekiah has made a pact with Egypt. He hopes they will help him defeat King Sennacherib's forces and welcome the assitance of an ally. But there is a problem. God has forbidden his people to make pacts with their old oppressor Egypt, it always leads to evil. So the prophet Isaiah speaks to the truth to Hezekiah in all its terrifying consequences. God will allow his people to be utterly defeated because of his disobedience. Hezekiah could despair, he knows he has done wrong like so many of his forebears, but instead he tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth and repents. How will God respond? Join with us tomorrow to find out.

This will be the last livestream for the summer with the exception of Gala Sunday on Sunday 23rd June. We are so thankful for your support. Livestreaming will return on Sunday 30th August. If you live locally come and join with us 10.45am in person. If you cannot we have an archive of 6 years of livestreaming to choose from. The Lord bless you and see you in the autumn.

We are in Easter season. In Isaiah 26.4 the prophet proclaims:
Trust in the Lord for ever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.

The Rock; sure, foundational, immovable, trustworthy. We build our homes out of it and on it. Many of us climb it. It is the very bones of the Earth. Take a few moments to hink of the number of times in the scriptures rocks feature... Got some? There are so many. And tomorrow we will explore them together and see how they encourage us to put our trust in the one true Rock and find our footing in him, even as Isaiah tells us yet again that the dead will rise. The promise is there, written before Jesus' death and resurrection, before God made our salvation a secure city that Psalm 46 speaks of, a place of refuge in a troubled world, the Rock of his presence, our strength and refuge, where we find eternal life, even though the Earth gives way.

We are in Easter season. In Revelation 1.18 Jesus lays claim to his ownership of the keys of death and hell. They belong to him. In Jesus the judgement foretold in Isaiah 24 becomes the vision of salvation foretold in Isaiah 25. Instead of running and hiding from disaster, instead of hoping to avoid catastrophe, Jesus walks straight towards it to rescue us and fulfil his declaration at Lazarus' tomb, "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11.25). What a saviour! That is why those keys now belong to him and we can declare "death where is your victory, death where it your sting?....thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15.55-56) And Jesus gets to say, "my keys!"

In chapters 13 and 14 Isaiah is God's mouthpiece to the King of Babylon. God is not pleased. As Isaiah speaks judgement over the pagan King whose imperial forces threaten Jerusalem the language takes a turn. "How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn!" (14.12) This does not sound like an account of earthly events. God is now speaking of the rebellion behind the fall. Through the prophet God transcends the details of contemporary politics and behind it a darker hand is revealed.

Whilst drones terrorise in the Donbas and the world focuses on the Strait of Hormuz, whilst there is bloodshed and heartache in Sudan and across the African Sahel, behind the destruction of life and the suffering of humanity, behind the wickedness of the warmongers a darker hand is revealed. It has always been this way. These matters seem too weighty for us. How can we contend with such wholesale wickedness and hatred. Jesus said he saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning (Luke 10.18). John said that the reason Jesus came was to destroy the works of the evil one (1 John 3.8). And as we look back to the events of Good Friday we recognise that it is at the cross that the enemy is judged. The moment that secures our freedom is the moment the fallen Morning Star is judged. Our redemption is his condemnation. As for us, moment by moment, by the leading of the Spirit, we are called to live as saints in this broken world, as children of the Father of Lights (James 1.17) in the midst of the darkness. We are vulnerable to temptation but by sheer God given grace we will prevail along with every other life we invite to come and join us.

Jesus has taken our "sins and our sorrow and made them his very own" as we sang on Good Friday(I Stand Amazed). On Maundy Thursday we pondered that "he was lead like a lamb to the slaughter" (Isaiah 53.7) as we shared his reshaped Passover meal together. On Good Friday we remembered that "He was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities" (Isaiah 53.5) as Sue extinguished each candle. And now Jesus has gone through the veil of death to lead out "captives in his train" (Psalm 68:18, Ephesians 4:8). He has "destroyed the shroud that covers all the peoples" (Isaiah 25.7). Easter Sunday is upon us. Now we celebrate that as Jesus the Suffering Servant sees "the light of life" (Isaiah 53.11) and that he offers us that same gift. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again! Join with as we plunge deep into this glorious truth in the presence of that sameJesus, alive and with us by his Spirit, calling each one of us into the light of life. Hallelujah!
