In Eden - sad indeed that day -
My countless blessings fled away,
My crown fell in disgrace.
But on victorious Calvary that crown was won again for me -
My life shall all be praise.

Faith, see the place, and see the tree
Where heaven's Prince instead of me,
Was nailed to bear my shame.
Bruised was the dragon by the Son,
Though two had wounds, there conquered One
And Jesus was his name.

(William Williams, translated by Robert Maynard Jones)

In preparing for tomorrow's (Sunday 17th November 2024) sermon, I was reminded of this quote by J. I. Packer in his book “Among God’s Giants”. It is lengthy, but worth the read (it does my soul good every time I do so):

"To the question, ‘What must I do to be saved?’, the old gospel replies: believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. To the further question, ‘What does it mean to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ?’, its reply is: it means knowing oneself to be a sinner, and Christ to have died for sinners; abandoning all self-righteousness and self-confidence, and casting oneself wholly upon him for pardon and peace; and exchanging one’s natural enmity and rebellion against God for a spirit of grateful submission to the will of Christ through the renewing of one’s heart by the Holy Ghost. And to the further question still, ‘How am I to go about believing on Christ and repenting, if I have no natural ability to do these things?’, it answers: look to Christ, speak to Christ, cry to Christ, just as you are; confess your sin, your impenitence, your unbelief, and cast yourself on his mercy; ask him to give you a new heart, working in you true repentance and firm faith; ask him to take away your evil heart of unbelief and to write his law within you, that you may never henceforth stray from him. Turn to him and trust him as best you can, and pray for grace to turn and trust more thoroughly; use the means of grace expectantly, looking to Christ to draw near to you as you seek to draw near to him, watch, pray, read and hear God’s word, worship and commune with God’s people, and so continue till you know yourself beyond doubt that you are a changed being, a penitent believer, and the new heart which you desire has been put within you."

What is holiness? It is to be like Jesus Christ. What did he say of himself? "I came not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me. He did not consider himself. He said "Here am I, send me." Though he was the Son of God he humbled himself, he volunteered, he gave himself utterly and absolutely. "The words I speak, I speak not of myself," he says. "The works that I do are the works that the Father has given me to do." "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." That was the way in which he lived in this world.

Such behaviour is the absolute perfection of holiness and sanctification. And you and I are to be like that.

(D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Romans -- Exposition of Chapter 6, The New Man, p294)

"Give yourself unto reading. The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains, proves that he has no brains of his own." - Charles Spurgeon

Remember that there will be a bookstall at CEBC this Sunday.

"If God had perceived that our greatest need as economic, he would have sent an economist. If he had perceived that our greatest need was entertainment, he would have sent us a comedian or an artist. If God had perceived that our greatest need was political stability, he would have sent us a politician. If he had perceived that our greatest needs was health, he would have sent us a doctor. But he perceived that our greatest need involved our sin, our alienation from him, our profound rebellion, our death; and he sent us a saviour."
(Don Carson, "A Call to Spiritual Reformation -- Priorities from Paul and His Prayers")
