It's a bitterly cold day in winter 1924. A famous Gloucester GP - Dr Walter Hadwen has, the last few weeks, been attending two poorly children who had contracted diphtheria, the family living in Vauxhall Road, off Barton Street, Gloucester. A third sibling - Nellie was taken ill and Dr Hadwen attended her at 49 Vauxhall Road, ran tests and gave basic medication, promising to call again the next day. Later, Nellie contracted pneumonia (possibly from walking barefoot dressed only in a nightie, outside looking for her mother, or maybe it was an after affect of Diphtheria). Nellie's parents called another GP, who sadly, could not help. Nellie died and Dr Hadwen was brought to Gloucester Assizes (Crown Court) in October 1924, accused of manslaughter.
