Daily Reflection for Creationtide - Water: The Gift of Life (Day 2)
Welcome to our daily reflection for Tuesday, 8 September during this Season of Creation.
And a reminder that we shall be walking from Glossop Church to Swineshaw Reservoir (about 20 min walk) on Saturday at 3pm for a blessing of the water.
The theme today is The Spirit over the Waters
Scripture: Genesis 1.1-5
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep,
while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.
And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
How amazing water is. Our lives depend upon it and yet we mostly take it for granted. So much of what exists, of what God created, consists of water.
Most of our planet consists of water, most of us humans too. The amount of water on earth remains the same, though it changes form, in and endless cycle. This is interesting to reflect on, in a time of drought.
Do we value water more in a time of drought? Certainly we are more careful of it and how we use it.
I wonder if we need to experience the absence of God sometimes, the emptiness, the dryness, the lack of possibility in order to value his presence and his gifts?
And yet, God is always present, always bestowing his gifts and his abundance, his blessing on our lives, even when it doesn’t feel that way.
So, where is the drought in my life right now? What do I need to do to open up to new life, new possibilities, new beginnings?
Spirit of God, open my eyes, open my mind, open my heart.
Prayer:
Spirit of God, move over the waters of our lives and our world. Bring new life where there is emptiness. Amen.
Action: Spend five quiet minutes beside water, simply observing it.
