7 JUNE 2026 – THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST - SOLEMNITY

Mission Statement: The parish of St. Mary Magdalene is a Catholic community of Christian faith with three churches – Saint Paul’s in Glenrothes, Saint Mary’s in Leslie and the Chapel Royal in Falkland. We are centred on the Word of God and the Eucharist.
Our mission is to live the Gospel and share it with those we meet. We are a welcoming and inclusive community of prayerful disciples, using our gifts for the glory of God and in service to one another and our neighbours. We are committed to do this now and in the future

When the Chosen People journeyed across the vast desert for forty years (forty years indicating a lengthy time), God provided manna to nourish and sustain them. Without it, many would have starved and never made it to the promised land. The manna sent from heaven restored life to their bodies. The Body and Blood that Jesus gives us to eat nourishes and sustains us as we journey through our earthly lives, which can be times of trial, on our way to be with him eternally. Jesus promises us that “whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day” (Jn 6:54). This is what we celebrate every Sunday and every time we celebrate the Eucharist. The living bread come down from heaven gives us life forever. The true food and true drink we consume gives us true life - life eternal.
In today’s second reading Saint Paul tells the Corinthians that they receive more than sustenance and nourishment when they receive the Eucharist. Before this they have participated in the offering of the Body and Blood of Christ. This puts us into communion with God and with each other. It also brings us into unity as the single body of Christ, which is the Church.
Physical hunger is a simple fact of life. Whether we have plenty, live on a limited budget or suffer from malnutrition we experience the pangs of hunger whenever we have not eaten for a while. Spiritual hunger is a fact of life as well. Our spirits need sustenance and nourishment as much as our bodies do. We need friendship, we need intimacy, we need peace of mind, we need love. Jesus satisfies this hunger and explains it in physical terms. The “true food” he provides is his very self, which gifts us an intimacy beyond any other gift, a communion of love with Christ in the Eucharist.

Question of the Week When I receive the Eucharist; I receive Jesus within me. How does knowing that Jesus is in me affect the way I act in the world?

Review of structures within the Church in Scotland:
The Holy See is inviting us all to reflect on how the present dioceses within Scotland can best serve the mission of the Church in the years ahead. We are invited to reflect on the following questions:

1. Where do we see good examples of mission in our parishes, deanery, diocese and country?

2. Where does mission need to develop or even begin? What are the barriers to better mission and what can encourage it?

3. Does the present structure of 8 dioceses in Scotland support mission? Does our diocese already have all that it needs? Would it help if we were to share resources with another diocese(s)? Would it help if our diocese merged with another diocese?

You can reply directly to the above questions at bit.ly/archconsultation26 – the parish pastoral council will discuss these questions at the next meeting on Wednesday 17 June and prepare a response on behalf of the parish, so individual contributions will be welcomed – email or hand them in to the church house.

Congratulations to our young Communicants! We are incredibly proud of all the children for the dedication, reverence and preparation they showed as they received the Eucharist for the first time. It was such a special and joyful celebration for our parish community. As you continue to grow in faith, may you always feel close to Jesus and continue to join us at Holy Mass to receive Him in the Eucharist. May God guide and bless each of you on your journey of faith.
Thank you to all who helped guide and prepare the children for this important sacrament, and to the families who joined us in celebrating such a joyful occasion.
The photos are of the children receiving their certificates.

31 MAY 2026 – THE MOST HOLY TRINITY - SOLEMNITY

Mission Statement: The parish of St. Mary Magdalene is a Catholic community of Christian faith with three churches – Saint Paul’s in Glenrothes, Saint Mary’s in Leslie and the Chapel Royal in Falkland. We are centred on the Word of God and the Eucharist.
Our mission is to live the Gospel and share it with those we meet. We are a welcoming and inclusive community of prayerful disciples, using our gifts for the glory of God and in service to one another and our neighbours. We are committed to do this now and in the future.

“The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity,” God says to Moses in the first reading (Ex 34:6). It is interesting that God uses a description that does not include the first words that may come to mind regarding the divine essence, words like all-powerful, all-knowing, infinite, or perfect. These words are true, of course, but God instead chooses to use words that are relational. God cannot be any of these things, merciful or gracious, kind or faithful, without someone else. But the fact that God is three persons means that God is relational from eternity. Indeed, Jesus relies on these qualities when he faces his suffering and death. He relies on his trust that the Father is merciful to him, is gracious to him, is faithful to him. He also relies on these qualities when he promises the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Our God is a relational God, and God’s mercy, grace, love, and fidelity to us reflects these qualities which are shared eternally among Father, Son, and Spirit.
God’s generosity is strongly reflected in today’s readings. God’s self-description to Moses relates God’s generosity with mercy, grace, forgiveness, kindness, and faithfulness. Perhaps the ultimate example of God’s generosity comes in his Son, a gift to the world in the incarnation who gives himself over to death on the cross. As John points out, God is also generous with salvation. It is available to anyone who believes in the Son. Finally, God has given us the Holy Spirit, who remains with us always. Generosity is another relational quality, needing another person with whom to be generous.
We cannot be all-powerful, all-knowing, infinite, or perfect. Nor can we bring salvation to the world. However, we can be merciful, gracious, slow to anger, kind, faithful, loving, and generous. The qualities that God puts first and foremost as godlike are qualities we can have, and use, as well. When we forgive and bear with one another, act kindly, give of ourselves, and love each other, we are acting as God self-identifies.

Question of the Week: What will I do this week to reflect the qualities of the divine essence?

24 MAY 2026 – SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST

Mission Statement: The parish of St. Mary Magdalene is a Catholic community of Christian faith with three churches – Saint Paul’s in Glenrothes, Saint Mary’s in Leslie and the Chapel Royal in Falkland. We are centred on the Word of God and the Eucharist.
Our mission is to live the Gospel and share it with those we meet. We are a welcoming and inclusive community of prayerful disciples, using our gifts for the glory of God and in service to one another and our neighbours. We are committed to do this now and in the future.

Just over three months ago, on Ash Wednesday, we began a journey from darkness to light, from sin to salvation, from death to new life. Lent began in winter, when days were short and darkness exceeded light. We celebrate the entire season of Easter during spring, when days grow longer and light dominates the day. The readings from Ash Wednesday called us to repentance; when imparting the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives his disciples the power to forgive. On Ash Wednesday we were reminded that we will return to dust, but on Easter morning we beheld the promise of the Resurrection. In a sense, our journey is now complete. We are now called to witness to the Risen Lord and the Holy Spirit as we accompany others on their journeys from darkness, sin, and death, to light, salvation, and new life.
The accounts of the coming of the Holy Spirit given by Luke in Acts and by John in his Gospel are markedly different. In John’s Gospel Jesus gives his disciples the Holy Spirit himself the first time he appears to them after the Resurrection. In Acts the Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples after Jesus has ascended to heaven. In John the Holy Spirit arrives in the soft breath of Jesus. In Luke the Spirit comes as a strong driving wind. In John the disciples are silent. In Acts the disciples immediately begin to speak in tongues loud enough to be heard outside. Why the contradictions? It might help to think of the coming of the Holy Spirit as a process, in stages, with the disciples slowly realizing the power they’d been given. Indeed, the Holy Spirit descended upon most of us in infancy, when we could not know what was happening, but appears again and again in different ways, with different gifts and different workings, throughout our whole life.
Between wishing his disciples peace and bestowing on them the Holy Spirit Jesus did one other thing - he showed them his wounds. The disciples may have thought that this was only to prove to them that it was him, but it may have also been to show them that even with his glorified body the wounds remain. The wounds are a part of him now. The risen Lord is wounded, as are we all, but this does not prevent the Holy Spirit working in us and through us.
Question of the Week Have I felt the Holy Spirit’s movement in my life in both powerful and gentle ways?

17 MAY 2026 – 7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Mission Statement: The parish of St. Mary Magdalene is a Catholic community of Christian faith with three churches – Saint Paul’s in Glenrothes, Saint Mary’s in Leslie and the Chapel Royal in Falkland. We are centred on the Word of God and the Eucharist.
Our mission is to live the Gospel and share it with those we meet. We are a welcoming and inclusive community of prayerful disciples, using our gifts for the glory of God and in service to one another and our neighbours. We are committed to do this now and in the future.

When the New Testament refers to Jesus’ “brothers,” they are not speaking of brothers in the sense of siblings who share the same parents. Recall that when Jesus is asked about his brothers, he says that whoever does the will of the Father is his brother and his sister. So, we read the last sentence of today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles as meaning that along with the Eleven, the Blessed Mother and other women, there are others who have chosen to follow God’s will. This is what we are called to do. When we pray, we seek to better discern God’s will so that we may follow it as brothers and sisters of the Lord.
On the night before he died, gathered around the table with his disciples, Jesus prayed that he might give eternal life to all those the Father gave him, that is, to all people. He described eternal life as true knowledge of God the Father and God the Son. This is his promise to us now. We prayed in the responsorial psalm that the one thing we seek is “to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of [our] life” (Ps 27:4). When that time comes, God will be wholly revealed to us. Until then we pray that we may come to know God more fully so that we may love God with all our heart, strength, mind, and being. Then we can more fully love him in ourselves and in our neighbour.
When we pray we hope to become increasingly conscious of our union with God who is always with us. Let us not forget that the Holy Spirit, whose coming we will celebrate next Sunday, remains with us forever. Created in the image of God, we are united with God and one another as one single family of billions across space and time. Prayer reminds us of our relationship to God, as the one we can turn to in need, in thanksgiving, in praise, and with remorse. As the disciples turned to prayer when they could no longer speak with the Lord in the flesh, so too we turn to prayer to speak to God. Prayer lifts our hearts and minds to God.

Question of the Week How have I gotten to know God better through prayer? Will I take the time each day this week to note how prayer has changed or affected me?

National gathering celebrating Synodality This festival will be held on Saturday 6 June at Glasgow Caledonian University from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This is more than a conference. It is an opportunity to experience Conversation in the Spirit first hand and discover a practical and prayerful way of discerning God’s will together for the future of the Church.
The day will celebrate the fruits already flourishing in the Scottish Church and feature inspiring witnesses to the Synod: Bishop Alan McGuckian SJ of Down and Connor
Fr David McCallum SJ (who helped facilitate the recent Synods in Rome), and Sandra Chaoul (also part of the Discerning Leadership programme in Rome)
Expect prayer, inspiration, real conversation, and time to connect with others from parishes, schools, dioceses and faith organisations across the country.
If anyone is interested in going to this event, please speak to Fr Philip.
