Last night the boys at Juniors & Anchors played a game of foot-pool, essentially the same rules of the game of pool except on a much larger scale and using your foot instead of a cue.

The boys helped set up by placing the tables to create the large scale “pool table” and had a couple games in their teams using strategy and initiative.

As we were off last week due to the school holidays, we then discussed the story and purpose of Lent and what it means to us as Christians as we begin this period.

140 years ago today on 21st December 1885, the 16th Glasgow Boys' Brigade held its first meeting at Whitevale Free Church in the Gallowgate, Glasgow.

The company later moved to Gorbals MacNicol Memorial church in 1900 and finally to our current home in Croftfoot Parish Church in 1938.

Throughout the years we have had an array of talented boys and Officers with many memories of countless football teams, pipe bands, Bible study classes as well as regular section nights.

The company continues to this day as we teach independence skills, take part in community projects, encourage charity work and learn new skills.

Let’s hope for another 140 years still to come!

If you are a former member then let us know your favourite memories of your time at BB in the comment section.

On Sunday, the officers of the 16th Glasgow Boys' Brigade presented a special gift to our Captain, Alan Duncan in recognition of the commitment he has made towards our company over the years.

Alan started as a parent volunteer in 1998 and has subsequently provided 27 years of loyal service to the Boys’ Brigade in Croftfoot even after his son, Jonny left after receiving his Queens Badge.

Alan then stepped up as Captain in 2008, and has since led our company through some fantastic moments.

Alan is much loved not just by the hundreds of boys, past and present who he has supported over the years.

As a company we would like to thank Alan for all his support and dedication to the company and the wider Croftfoot Parish Church congregation and community

Thank you Alan

CROFTFOOT REMEMBERS…

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
Britain mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond Britain’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

On Tuesday, the Anchors & Junior Section were learning about the purpose of prayer and specifically thinking of showing gratitude for those who “point us in the right direction” using the 5 finger prayer. We each added a sentence to our closing prayer to end our evening.

We also returned to a tradition that has been missing for over 20 years as we hoisted the BB flag during the evening. Over the next few weeks we’ll be learning about traditions around flag ceremony & talking about the history of the flag
