St Bride's Episcopal Church, Glasgow

St Bride's Episcopal Church, Glasgow St Bride's Episcopal Church in G12. A living, growing, and engaged community of Christians witnessing to an Anglo-Catholic vision of worship, service and life.

Welcome to the page of St Bride's Episcopal Church, Glasgow! We update the page regularly, so keep an eye out for upcoming services, events and opportunities to get involved. St Bride's is a community of Christians of all ages and from all walks of life, who share their faith in God together in Glasgow's west end. Our main act of worship is the 10.30 am Choral Eucharist every Sunday morni

ng, and we have further services throughout the week. Everyone is welcome at all of our services. We are committed to making St Bride's a warm, welcoming and friendly place for everyone who visits us, for whatever reason. People with faith, people with none, and those who are exploring aspects of their spiritual life - we want all of you to be a part of our community. We welcome everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, colour or class, and hope to see you in person soon! Prayerfulness is a fundamental part of what St Bride's is all about; services of reflection and prayer are offered in the church throughout week. The church is an oasis of calm in the bustling, lively west end of the city. Come inside to just sit and enjoy the quietness, pray, have a look at the architecture and stained glass windows, or listen to beautiful music. We try to help others wherever we can. This could be by simply offering a listening ear, collecting items for a foodbank or knitting clothes for babies living in deprived areas of the world. There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved! Music is a vital part of life at St Bride's, and underpins our worship from week to week. Our choir sings a range of beautiful music for all services throughout the year. We always welcome new members, and Choral Scholarships are available. St Bride's, with its excellent acoustic, is used frequently for concerts and occasionally for recordings. We are currently (2016-17) raising funds to restore our wonderful, 150-year-old William Hill organ. See our website for details. St Bride's Episcopal Church is part of the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, one of the seven historic Dioceses of the Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC). The SEC is part of the world-wide Anglican Communion, an association of churches in full communion with the Church of England, and specifically with its Primate, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The SEC has also entered into several formal agreements with churches across Europe, such as the Porvoo Agreement (with Nordic and Baltic churches), and has close links with other British denominations.

Welcome to the St Bride's weekly newsletter for the week beginning Sunday 14 June, the Second Sunday after Trinity.

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus looks upon the crowds and is moved with compassion, ‘because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd’. He then sends out the Twelve, commissioning them to proclaim the kingdom and to share in his own ministry of healing and restoration. The calling of the apostles recalls the vocation first given to Israel (Exodus 19). Israel’s identity did not rest upon land, power, or political strength, but upon God’s promise and God’s presence among them. They were called to be a holy nation and a kingdom of priests, a people through whom the knowledge of God might be made known to the world.

Like Israel in the wilderness, the Church often finds itself in a precarious position, sustained not by earthly securities but by the promises of God. The events of recent days remind us how fragile our institutions and possessions can be. Yet the Church's identity does not rest upon buildings, treasures, or worldly strength, but upon the God who calls, gathers, and sends his people.

On Friday we will be observing the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus with a Low Mass at 08:15 a.m.

This is a popular devotion which dates back to the middle ages, flowered in France in the seventeenth century as a result of the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. It recalls the mystery of God, who is love, and honours the heart of Jesus as the source and centre of the incarnate love of God.

Devotion to the Heart of Jesus is also expressed in the writings of medieval saints including Bernard of Clairvaux, Gertrude the Great, and the English mystic, Mother Julian of Norwich.

The Sacred Heart is also the subject of a wonderful book by the English Puritan and pastor, Thomas Goodwin, who served as Chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. His book, ‘The Heart of Christ in Heaven Towards Sinners in Earth’, is a profound meditation on Christ's compassion for struggling believers.

The religious communities of the Anglican Society of St Francis observe today as the Feast of the Divine Compassion in memory of the first Anglican Franciscan religious community, the Society of the Divine Compassion, which was founded in Plaistow, East London, in 1894. The SDC friars were committed to social justice for the often impoverished communities of the East End, perceiving them to be made in the image of Christ.

This Sunday’s readings bring together the prophet Hosea and the ministry of Jesus. Through Hosea, the Lord God declares, ‘I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God and not burnt offerings’; and in the Gospel Jesus repeats those same words as he welcomes tax collectors, restores the sick, and raises the dead. The point is not that worship is unimportant, but that true worship must bear fruit in lives formed by God’s mercy. The sacrifices of the temple find their fulfilment in a people whose hearts have been transformed by God’s grace. Having received God’s love, we are called to show that same faithful love in our dealings with others, carrying the worship of the sanctuary into the life of the world.
