Title:
“When the Plumb Line Falls: The Shutting of the Door of Mercy and the Rebuilding of a True Foundation"
The door of mercy can be shut over an individual or even a nation when God has repeatedly revoked judgment because of the intercession of His righteous servants, yet the people stubbornly refuse to amend their ways and return to the Lord. Their Christianity resembles a building with a faulty foundation; and when the Lord passes His plumb line over it, it becomes evident that no structure built on such a foundation can ever stand.
Therefore, the old structure must be torn down so that a new foundation may be laid — even Christ Jesus, for no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Only when a person builds on this righteous foundation — hearing and doing the Word of God — will their life stand against the storms, trials, and the floods spewed out of the mouth of Satan, that ancient serpent.
■ 1. The Plumb Line of God’s Judgment
Amos 7:7-8 AMPC
[7] Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord stood upon a wall with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand. [II Kings 21:13; Isa. 34:11.] [8] And the Lord said to me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumb line. Then said the Lord, Behold, I am setting a plumb line as a standard in the midst of My people Israel. I will not pass by and spare them any more [the door of mercy is shut].
This directly supports our point: God measures His people, and when the standard of His Word is continually rejected, the door of mercy closes.
■ 2. The Only True Foundation
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:11
This anchors our statement that Christ alone is the foundation upon which a life or nation can stand. He is the only way, truth and life, if we do not surrender to Him we cannot go to the Father in heaven or enjoy the benefits of the Covenant, for He is the only mediator of the New Covenant, ratified in His own blood.
■ 3. Hearing and Doing the Word Builds a Storm‑Proof Life
“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock… and it did not fall.”
Matthew 7:24–25
This supports our teaching that obedience to the Word is what makes the structure stand.
■ 4. Satan Spews a Flood Against the Righteous
“The serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood… to sweep her away.”
Revelation 12:15
This reinforces our imagery of satanic opposition attempting to destroy what is not firmly founded on Christ.
■ Conclusion
When God stretches His plumb line over a life, a church, or a nation, He is not measuring to condemn but to reveal what cannot stand. Mercy delays judgment, but when mercy is continually rejected, the door of mercy closes, and the faulty structure must fall. Yet even in judgment, God’s intention is restoration. He tears down only what refuses to align with Christ so that a new, unshakeable foundation may be laid.
The call of the Spirit in this hour is clear: Return to the Lord. Tear down every false foundation. Build again on Christ alone — His Word, His ways, His truth, His life. For only what is built on obedience to Him will withstand the storms, the shaking, and the flood released by the enemy. Everything else will crumble.
But to the one who hears and obeys, the Lord says:
“Your house will stand.”
This is the mercy of God — not the sparing of the old structure, but the grace to build anew on the only foundation that will endure forever: Christ Jesus.
