YOU CAN SIT WITH ME

You got hammered at the bar on Saturday but came to church on Sunday.
You can sit with me. You’re right where you need to be.

You’re a drug addict but came to church on Sunday.
You can sit with me. You’re right where you need to be.

You’re divorced, and the last church you attended condemned you for it.
You can sit with me. You’re right where you need to be.

You’ve had an abortion and it’s slowly eating away at your heart, but you came to church on Sunday.
You can sit with me. You’re right where you need to be.

You’ve been unfaithful to your spouse but came to church on Sunday.
You can sit with me. You’re right where you need to be.

Here’s the thing, people don’t come to church on Sunday for you to sit in the pew and quietly judge them because you feel that you’re somehow better than them.

People come to church because in their deepest, darkest, most painful moments, they heard about a man named Jesus who could save their soul and they’d like to know Him.

It is with great sadness we inform you that the Rt Rev Dr Gregor Duthie Duncan died peacefully yesterday, Friday, 21 November, at the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston, in the company of his sister Morag and friend Liz. His funeral service will be held at St Ninian’s, Pollokshields with further details communicated in due course.

The Rt Rev Dr Nicholas Bundock, the current Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway said: “My friendship with Bishop Gregor was short but it was real. I can see why so many will be touched and saddened by his death and I’m so honoured that our paths crossed, even for such a brief time. As he goes to join that Great Cloud of Witnesses, his legacy lives on here in Glasgow and Galloway.”

Bishop Gregor was born on 11 October 1950, the son of Edwin John Duncan and Janet Brown. He studied at Allan Glen’s School in Glasgow, followed by the University of Glasgow and Clare College, Cambridge, and then for the priesthood at Oriel College, Oxford and Ripon College Cuddesdon. He was ordained deacon in 1983 and priest in 1984 by the Rt Rev Douglas Feaver, Bishop of Peterborough and served as assistant curate at All Saints, Oakham (1983-1986). From 1987 to 1989, Bishop Gregor was the Chaplain to the Edinburgh Theological College (the precursor of TISEC and SEI). He was the rector of St Columba’s, Largs (1989-1999) and St Ninian’s, Pollokshields (1999-2010). He was the Dean of Glasgow and Galloway (1997-2010). On 16 January 2010, he was elected as the 14th bishop of the United Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway and was consecrated on 23 April 2010, serving until his retirement on 11 October 2018. Latterly, Bishop Gregor served as assistant priest at St Bride’s, Kelvinside (2018-2022) and held a PTO in the Diocese.

Almighty God,
we give you thanks for the life and ministry of Bishop Gregor,
for his service in this diocese,
and for all in whom he awakened faith, hope and love.
Receive him into your everlasting arms,
comfort all who grieve
and grant us grace to follow in the way of Christ,
in whose name we pray.
Amen.

May Bishop Gregor rest in peace and rise in glory.
