Priority Areas

Priority Areas Our focus is on the work of the Mission Support Programme Group. We work alongside faith communities tackling poverty in the poorest neighbourhoods in Scotland.

Priority Areas is responsible for the support, development and coordination of the Church of Scotland's work within its poorest 64 communities. Our vision is a reinvigorated and sustainable worshiping people and community life in all 64 priority area parishes. We strive for this by placing priority for the poorest and the most marginalised; a Gospel imperative facing the whole Church, not just the Church in the poorest places.

✨ Sharing Good News ✨

A story from John after attending our Fresh Expressions Learning Community last weekend:

“Absolutely what ministry and outreach is about - it’s to meet people where they’re at. Just as Jesus done, he went out to the poor, the needy. The unpopular, the salt of the earth as they refer to them. And he absolutely got alongside them, he got to know them and he served them. That’s what I would encourage you to do; think about on your journey, who have you served in this week? And how would you like to be able to serve more in your communities?”

A simple but powerful challenge for us all as we seek to live out our faith in everyday places.

The Wee Conversation – This Friday

This week we’re delighted to welcome Elaine Downie from Faith in Community Scotland, who will be sharing about the work of the Poverty Truth Community – a movement that brings together people with lived experience of poverty and civic leaders to listen, learn and shape change together.

We also hope to be joined by John Harvey, whose ministry has included serving in Priority Areas and leadership within the Iona Community, reflecting a long commitment to justice, faith and community.

Join us for a conversation about justice, listening and change in Scotland.

All are welcome.

Join us this week for the Wee Conversation where we are delighted to welcome John Nonhebel, Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Scotland.

Prison Fellowship Scotland works across all of Scotland’s prisons, bringing hope and support through faith-based conversation groups, Sunday services, restorative programmes like the Sycamore Tree victim-awareness course, family support and more.

John has spent his career with disadvantaged communities – including 20 years in urban ministry and charity work before leading Prison Fellowship Scotland – and has a passion for seeing lives transformed by the gospel even in the toughest of places.

Whether you’re involved in criminal justice ministry or simply curious about how the Church can walk with people affected by crime and imprisonment, we invite you to join us to hear John share about this vital work.
