A remarkable glimpse into our parish history!

Check out this wonderful photograph of the original “wooden” church, standing alongside the parish presbytery and the first school building. (Got AI to help show what the buildings may have looked in colour)

The church was opened in 1873 under the leadership of our founding parish priest, Fr Edward Noonan, and served the growing Catholic community during the parish’s early years.

Much has changed since then. The original church and school building have long since disappeared, but the presbytery still stands today alongside our current church, built 1910, providing a tangible link to the pioneering days of our parish.

As we look at this image, we are reminded of the faith, sacrifice, and determination of those who came before us and laid the foundations of the parish community we enjoy today.

We give thanks for their legacy and pray that Sacred Heart Parish may continue to flourish for generations to come. 🙏✝️

A glimpse of our parish founder

This drawing of Fr Edward Noonan was discovered today in a parish jubilee magazine.

Originally from Limerick, Ireland, Fr Noonan was the founding parish priest of Sacred Heart. He served the community from 1872 until his sudden death in 1886, guiding the young parish through its earliest years.

During his time here, he oversaw the opening of the original wooden church in 1873, helping to establish the foundations of our parish community and school alongside its first headmaster; Brother Walfrid F.M.

His contribution to Sacred Heart has not been forgotten. Fr Noonan is memorialised through the high altar in our present church, a lasting reminder of the faith, dedication, and vision of our founding pastor.

His mortal remains rest in the crypt of St Mary’s Church, Calton, where he awaits the resurrection of the dead.

May he rest in peace, and may we continue to build upon the legacy he left to our parish family. 🙏

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. ✝️

A fascinating find today!

I came across a parish jubilee magazine published to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of our parish in 1923.

I’ve scanned a few pages which may be of interest, offering a glimpse into our parish’s early history and the faith and dedication of those who built our community.

I’ll also share some wonderful photographs of our founding parish priest, together with images of the original wooden church, presbytery, and first school building.

It’s a beautiful reminder of our rich heritage and the generations of parishioners who have gone before us.

May God continue to bless our parish family as we build on their legacy. 🙏

We offer our congratulations to Fr Kieran Burt, who was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood for the Diocese of Motherwell by Bishop Joseph Toal yesterday, 19 June, at St Joseph’s Church, Blantyre.

At 25 years old, Fr Kieran is Scotland’s youngest priest. His ordination is a joyful occasion not only for the Diocese of Motherwell, but for the whole Church in Scotland, and a reminder that God continues to call men to dedicate their lives to serving His people.

Please keep Fr Kieran in your prayers as he begins his priestly ministry, and continue to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood throughout Scotland.

May God bless Fr Kieran abundantly as he begins this new chapter of his vocation.

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time – 21st June 2026

✝️ Holy Mass at Sacred Heart – 9.30am

The 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time teaches us to trust God in difficult times. Jeremiah experiences fear and rejection, yet remains confident that God is with him. The psalm reminds us that God hears the cries of those who suffer. St Paul explains that while sin entered the world through Adam, Jesus Christ brings grace, forgiveness, and new life.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells His followers: “Do not be afraid.” God cares for each one of us and knows our every need. If we stand with Jesus, He will stand with us. Today we are invited to live with courage, placing our trust in God’s loving care and protection.

🙏 We also remember and pray for all our dads on this Father’s Day, giving thanks for their love, guidance, and sacrifice.

All are welcome. Have a wonderful Sunday and may God bless you and your loved ones.

🙏

Remembering with affection and gratitude Cardinal Thomas Joseph Winning who died on this day 25 years ago. His motto was 'Caritas Christi Urget Nos' - we are spurred on by the love of Christ.
He lived out that motto every day of his life as a priest, bishop, archbishop and cardinal.
Requiescat in pace.
