WHEN GOD TURNED BACK THE CLOCK

Bible Read Thru - Day 264

Isaiah 37-38

“‘Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps.’ So the sun turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had declined.” (Isaiah‬ ‭38‬:‭8‬)

They say you can’t turn back the clock, but the God who had stopped the sun 24 hours for Joshua (10:13) now turns the sun dial back 10 steps for Hezekiah.

It’s not about reliving the past, but staying the ex*****on of a sinful, stubborn people.

History reveals that God wasn’t just granting Hezekiah another 15 years of healthy life. He was giving Judah (Babylonian captivity 597BC) an extra 125 years beyond the life of the Northern Kingdom (Assyrian captivity 722BC).

Nation after nation has already been listed in Isaiah’s judgement schedule, and Matthew (25:32) makes it clear that God will be in the business of judging whole nations right up to the end of the age.

Billy Graham long-since preached that if God doesn’t judge America and Western nations today, then He’ll have to raise up S***m and Gomorrah and apologise.

Lord, be merciful to our land 🙏. Turn back the clock. You delayed Noah’s flood until the 969th year of Methuselah. You held off on Judah for 125 years. For our land too - Please! - “in wrath remember mercy.” (Hab. 3:2)

BIBLE READ-THRU:
LIGHT in the DARK
Isaiah chapters 30-33

Praising God today that the community of King Jesus already HAS within it what Isaiah SAW one day coming to Judah and Israel.

‘Kingdom Heaven’ will one day be established in this crazy, sick world, but its light is already here, in Heaven’s embassy on Earth, established and guaranteed by King Jesus to prevail until He returns.

Heaven’s embassy on earth is Christ’s body, the Church.

We are, our King has said, His light in this world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden, like a lighthouse on a dark, wild, storm-tossed night.

Jesus’ beloved church - let no one mock His handiwork! - is Heaven’s agency on Earth’s foreign soil … until full-glory Zion finally comes.

As a fallen world sinks deeper into chaos, desperately willing to grab whatever false saviours pass its way, may Heaven’s local embassies continue to open wide their doors - “Your gates are salvation,” Isaiah later says - to all Earth’s fugitives seeking asylum, to find the same refuge we have found in Christ, where “the effect of righteousness is peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever,” where “the Lord is the stability of our times,” with “abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge,” and with “the fear of the Lord our treasure.”
(Isaiah 32:17; 33:6)

HE WHO CAME WILL COME AGAIN

BIBLE READ-THRU: Day 237

[Job 16-19; I Corinthians 16; Psalm 40:1-10; Proverbs 22:1.]

“For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God …” (Job‬ ‭19‬:‭25‬-‭26‬)

How amazing that words so ancient should find their way into Handel’s Messiah!

Yesterday’s New Testament reading was ‘The Resurrection Chapter’ (1 Corinthians 15), when mortal finally puts on immortal, but Job’s astonishing glimpse of the believer’s great hope was caught well before Paul’s, leapfrogging even the longest range vision of most of the Old Testament prophets, to the Last Day we still look ahead to at the end of 2025.

Even more astonishing than the age of Job’s revelation is its circumstance.

The Redeemer’s final victory on earth is a future immovable physical reality whose promise shines brightest in the darkest moments, unimaginably remote from the helplessness of the present.

From the poetry of Job to the hymns of Paul’s Philippian dungeon to the redemption songs of the slave plantation, the highest praises of God have always shone farthest from the lowest places.

The Christian hope is indestructible in a fallen world precisely because it flourishes more in adversity than prosperity, its fruit cultivated in the valley, its wine squeezed in the press.
