Celebration Sunday // The Dominion Mandate and Greatness Mindset

“What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet.” Psalm 8.4-6.

God made man after He had made other creatures but gave man some job descriptions and responsibilities. The first recorded address of God to man is very loaded and significant. “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over everything living that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1.28). The tone has agricultural, business, managerial, military, and kingly terminologies.

However, due to ignorance and naivety, man lost the dominion mandate. Ignorance is a horrible task master. You are at the mercy of anything you don’t know and you are vulnerable to it. Anything you don’t know controls you. But the times of ignorance God has overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.” (Acts 17.30).

“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” Matthew 20.26.

Jesus did not condemn a desire for greatness, He only gave a recommendation on the best way to go about it. He said the way up is down. Greatness comes only through service. Many are fixated on how to be a person of success, rather they should seek to be a person of value. As Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power, He went about doing good (Acts 10.38). The combination of the Holy Spirit and power can make any man or woman great in life but not for self glory but to become His witnesses (Acts 1.😎. Jesus in spite of being the Greatest of all times did not come to be served but to serve (Matthew 20.28), and demonstrated greatness through service, even to the undeserving.

Being made in God’s image and likeness, we do not only look like Him but we also think like Him. “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him” (John 1.18). Jesus Christ did not only reveal the Father but He sowed us how to think and live like Him. “Let this mind be in you⁺ that was also in Christ Jesus”(Philippians 2.5). Jesus has not only dominion mandate but also greatness mindset.
God has given us dominion mandate not to be conformed to circumstances but to be transformed and make circumstances conform to us. But we cannot fully operate in the dominion mandate without a relationship with Jesus Christ because in Him lies the fullness of all things and the dominion over all are under Him as the Lord of all. God has put all things under Christ's feet and made him the head over everything for the benefit of the church (Ephesians 1.22).

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:4–6

Nothing is as frustrating as working hard for something, ticking all the boxes, meeting all the requirements and yet not getting desired results. Everything looks like a wasted effort. But when it comes to salvation matters the rules are different. Paul first introduces God as rich in mercy which means He’s got more than enough mercies to lavish on people. He also mentions the love that God has for us. Love is a compelling force that can make you generously even beyond what you can afford.

God did not give based on our merit but even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. We were like dead cables brought and connected to a live cable to receive energy in us. The dead cables did not do anything and could actually not do anything to connect themselves because they were already dead to everything. But by grace not by self effort, they were connected and received life again.

“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” Romans 5.17.

Apparently, Paul is making a deductive argument here but not such a deductive but rather more of a classical rhetorical claim. If Adam’s offence could wield such influence and ripple effect on the following generations how much more the ripple effect of what Christ had procured for us through His precious blood. Paul added that we that have received the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness should reign in life through Christ Jesus and His finished work. The word reign here is “basileuo”, which refers to a kingly, judicial rule—to reign in life as a king, having kingly rule and dominion. God has not called us to a life of defeat, failure or frustration but as priest-king to pronounce judgment on circumstances and rule over them. We have the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness. These two powerful tools we have in abundance according to Peter as multiplied grace and peace. They have delivered unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness (2 Peter 1.3). Regardless of how you were born, you are now born again as a royalty to reign over sin, powers of darkness and things that make life miserable. You have weapons that are not physical yet powerful through God to turn circumstances around.

It has been intensely debated among theologians what Paul meant by “the marks of Jesus”. It was largely agreed that he used the word stigmata, which literally meant a brand or tattoo used in the ancient world to mark property, livestock, or slaves to show who owned them. By this, he was referring to the physical scars, wounds, and bruises he received from being beaten, stoned, and persecuted for preaching the Gospel. He referred to this as the marks of Jesus.
Blue chip companies don’t joke with their logo and iconic colours because this represents their brand image and leverage in a competitive market.

Marks are very important. In the life of a believer, what are the marks that God is looking for? That Satan is looking for? That the society or the world is looking for? More importantly, that a believer should be looking for in their own life?

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.” 2 Corinthians 16.9. The scars on Paul’s body may be an evidence of physical suffering but they represent the brokenness and how much he has dissolved into a Christlike believer. God is looking for people who have denied self, carrying their cross daily and following Jesus (Luke 9.23). Of all the 3 levels of warfare that a believer faces, self is the toughest. Because it takes place inside the believer. It’s a mind battle so it not fought with guns and ammunition but through total surrender.

The Gospel Breaks Yokes and Evil Patterns

“It shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck, And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.” Isaiah 10.27.

First, we must know that God is a Maker not a destroyer. But in life there is a destroyer who seeks and delights in destroying things that God has made. So, God is happy to destroy anything that seeks to destroy what He has made. Israel came under the threat of the super powers of invading Assyrians and they seemed powerless against the enemy.

Here we have a situation that connotes a burden, slavery, pain, servitude, bo***ge and heavy yoke. Assyria, a superpower and its king that is threatening the people of Israel have a history of conquering a nation and then oppress the people. But in the midst of the situation came a promise and hope. God said through the anointing, the Assyrian yoke was to be broken. This verse though has many renditions but we will stick to this context of God’s deliverance. The same promise still stands and available for you today, if you happen to have a similar situation on your hands.
