What does it mean to know your family will have enough food – even when the rains don’t come?

During periods of drought in Lusakucha, crops can fail and food becomes scarce. For some families, leaves gathered locally can become their only source of food.

But Esther’s story is changing.

Through Tearfund’s agricultural work, she can now grow food close to her home – helping provide enough for her family throughout the year.

For Esther, growing food means more than a harvest. It means greater security for the future.

Writing in today’s Scotsman, Head of Tearfund Scotland, Bee Roy, highlights our response to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan – a situation that has left millions facing extreme hardship, yet often remains overlooked.

Bee’s contribution comes as a new Scottish Government report highlights the vital impact of Scotland’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund (HEF). Over the past year, £1.4 million of Scottish funding has supported life-saving interventions for tens of thousands of people caught in some of the world’s most severe crises. Funds awarded to Tearfund have enabled our partners to respond in Sudan, Afghanistan and Malawi this year alone, with multiple projects in previous years delivering emergency assistance in times of urgent need.

Devastating flash flooding and mudslides have struck central-northern Nepal, causing widespread destruction and leaving families grieving, displaced and waiting for news of loved ones.

Homes, roads, bridges and vital infrastructure have been damaged. And rescue and relief operations are continuing as the full scale of the disaster becomes clear.

Tearfund is coordinating its response with government and local partners, carrying out initial assessments and preparing to support communities with urgent needs, including food, water and shelter.

Loice survived Ebola. But coming home brought another battle.

After recovering from the virus, she faced stigma from her community, lost her job and had essential belongings destroyed during decontamination.

Tearfund’s local partner came alongside Loice with counselling, home visits and practical support. As her community learned more about Ebola, attitudes towards her began to change.

Loice now speaks openly about her experience, helping others understand Ebola and challenging the fear and stigma surrounding the disease.

Despite everything she has faced, Loice remains hopeful for the future.

In northeast Uganda, families are facing severe food shortages. For some, finding enough food means climbing thorny trees to gather leaves for their next meal.

But hunger doesn’t have to have the final word.

Natalia shows us what can happen when love leads us to act – from helping crops grow to providing food for children who were going hungry.

Because the love Jesus shows us doesn’t stand still. It leads us towards our global neighbours. It leads us to act. 💛
