"Good Friday"

Why do we call "good"
the day we remember
Jesus' death?

Listen first
to the prophet, Isaiah

chapter 9 v 2,
"The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned..."

What is the source of this great light?

chapter 9 v 6-7
"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government
will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful
Counsellor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness
of his government
and peace
there will be no end."

How does he bring this peace?
By his death!

chapter 53 v 4
"Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering...
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all."

He has carried it all
for us!
The pain
the hurt
the sadness
the shame
And all that separates us
from a Holy God

He took it
He bore it
*for us*
And with his last breath
he said
"It is finished!"

And now,
says the apostle Paul
in Romans 8v38,39
"I am convinced
that neither death
nor life,
neither angels
nor demons,
neither the present
nor the future,
nor any powers,
neither height
nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us
from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus
our Lord."

John 1 v 5
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it"
